I was a manager of Carolina Value Village (CVV). I worked from 9/1997 to 8/2003, in which I have seen so many things happen to customers, employees not to mention my self that you would not believe.
Carolina Value Village (CVV) stores probably bring in around 4 to 6 MILLION dollars a year in NC alone. Yet regular employees are paid $5.15 an hour and have no company paid benefits other than a weeks paid vacation after a year. Managers make quite a bit more starting out around $500 a week plus bonus. On average most make close to $30,000 a year plus. Benefits are 401k, paid vacations, insurance (HMO company pays most) No sick days. If you are out you most make up time or loose pay for time missed (even though you are salary).
CVV is like a fund raiser for NKF. They collect donated items that are sold in company thrift stores. This all seems good and all nice, B U T ...... I never could get a straight answer on how much does NKF (a non profit organization) get from CVV (a FOR profit company).
The practices of CVV from the almost 6 years I was with them sell the product no matter if it works or not once they buy it is NOT OUR PROBLEM!!!!!!!! I have called the police on numerous times to remove an upset customer from the store because an item bought was not worth a dime. I worked on numerous computers in 1997 that were sold to poor computer illiterate people for outrageous prices that were so out of date you would be lucky to get a museum to purchase. Customers would continually come to me about the prices of things being so high. I tried to help but if I would have lowered a price that was to high it would have lost me my job.
Employees are not to be taken seriously by CVV if they were sick "don't call in crawl in" if you were out you must have Dr. note to return to work if not suspension. I myself (a manager for the company) had kidney stones on a Friday night I called the store manager early on Saturday, around 7:00am my hours that day were 12-close. I went to my Dr. on Monday they found blood in my urine so I had a CT done that day. When I returned to work on Tuesday I was suspended a week without pay because I did not go to Dr. on Saturday. It cost me $20. to go to Dr., $945 for CT,(great insurance.... NOT) plus the $550 salary, a total of almost $1700.00 P L U S get this little EXTRA... I make a complaint to the owner and I end up being arrested for EMPLOYEE LARCENY!!!!!!!!
There is a lot of things I would have liked to put down, NEEDED to put down... I have been mistreated by this company for a long time I have a file full of complaints. I wish I could list all but I am hurting a good bit right now . I have multiple health problems Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Myofascial Pain Syndrome, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Hoshimottos Disease, and suffer from severe depression.
I did get the Felony Larceny drop to a misdemeanor and got a Prayer For Judgment. I wanted to take the case to trial but after the arrest and three times to court I just wanted it over... I am now unemployed, have no chance of getting a job My wife is supporting us both while I file for disability.
