Chase Bank

I am going to relate my crazy unbelievable experience with Chase Bank as thoroughly as possible for you.

I went into my local Chase Bank to open an account.  I signed a check over to Chase Bank and was told that my account was open.   I was given a debit card and told that there was $200 immediately available on that card but the rest would not be available until the check cleared.   This sounds pretty normal, so I go about my business.

I wanted to check out the $200 availability on the card later that night I drove through the ATM at another Chase Bank where I was denied withdrawing $200.   So I tried $100 and that worked.   Wondering what was up, I put the card back into the machine.    The machine then said “Contact customer service”.     That is not what I was just told at Chase Bank hours earlier.

So I contact customer service and they begin asking me questions that I am not sure of the answer to, like, “What is your account number?”    I don’t know, I have had the account for three hours and I am not carrying the information with me.     “Why do you not know your account number?”    Did you not hear what I just said?   Their rep said he was transferring me to the Fraud Department, so I just hung up figuring I don’t need to talk to them and I don’t have time for another Spanish Inquisition.

So I wait for the check to clear, figuring that is the hang up, and once it clears everything will be normal.    That is not what happens.

Chase Bank says the check is over 180 days old, so they must wait 14 days to make sure it clears.  Trish, the local manager and person who I have been speaking with since the beginning, tells me to wait and see if the issuer pays the check or not.   So I wait, and check the internet, and it shows that the money is available, but according to Trish and the bank it is not.    I check the internet for information.   According to Federal Guidelines, a check is good for ANY amount of time considering that the Payer still has the funds to pay the check.  In other words, I have given Chase Bank an easily negotiable document written by a large well known corporation.

Days later I find that Chase Bank has closed my account on their own volition.    Chase Bank claims that the check will not be negotiable in any way.   They state that I need to contact the issuer and let them know to stop the check and reissue another one.

I do that, and get a letter back from the issuer showing that Chase Bank has cashed the check and had the funds in their account the whole time.

I go back to talk to Trish at Chase Bank on Walker in Oklahoma City again, and Trish takes more info and calls me the next day to inform me that Chase Bank is going to send the funds back to the issuer within NINETY DAYS.    Ninety days?   Chase Bank has fraudulently been holding my funds for thirty days and now they are saying they will fraudulently hold my money for now for ninety more days.   Is this legal?   I would think not.

I gave Chase Bank my funds in good faith and have been treated very poorly as a result.   My family is suffering as a result.     My funds have been tied up for a month and it may be five months from the date this started before the funds are accessible due to a total lack of competence at Chase Bank.   This is not a local circumstance.   This could happen with Chase Bank anywhere in the world.

DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.    AVOID CHASE BANK AT ALL COSTS.   Just go to any other bank and you will be better off, believe me.       Peace and Love to all.

If you don't like the answer, try to keep the person from posting. This is a public forum. You're expressing your opinion. Per site management I get to express my opinion too and it may differ from yours.

Just 3 of many sites that refute your assertion that checks are good indivinately. Please note these refer to Uniform Commercial Code and Federal Reserve guidelines. So it's not just people saying less than 6 months.

You are correct that it's not my business as to the specifics of why you decided to hold a check longer than 6 months before you cashed it. But by making that financial decision, you agreed to live with the consequences of that decision. Life, especially banking, doesn't isn't governed by "the way it should be" or "it's right to", it runs by it's rules and regulations. If you try to do something outside of these rules and regulations, the desired result will probably not be the one you want.

By the way, I do know about this subject as I worked Customer Service at a Call Center for one of the major banks. But that's okay, since I'm not agreeing with you being a victim of the evil bank I know you'll just try some more to discredit my answer. Doesn't bother me. I'm not the one who stuck myself with a stale check.

Well I guess some people just aren't as desperate for money as others. The reasons for not cashing that check are obviously none of your business and as well none of the bank's business. The bank actually held the funds for 6 months without any apologies even though the funds were available within 2 days of them accepting the check. Anyone can Google banking standards and regulations and see that any check written by any Corporation company or individual is negotiable as long as the bank is still open for business. It doesn't matter if the check was written in 1856 it is a negotiable document. Anyone who doesn't know that hasn't studied banking law and should not be commenting on the subject. This is worst cas this is worst case customer service terrible terrible terrible circumstances brought upon by the Banks neglect they should have known that was negotiable document they did cash the documents they knew it was negotiable and they still continue to hold the funds for 6 months there is no excuse

This could and probably would happen at any bank given the exact same circumstances.

1) Check over 180 days old.

2) Within hours of opening the account, muliple withdrawal attempts at ATM.

3) Not knowing account number.

4) "Refusal" to talk to fraud department by hanging up.

A bank does not have to allow you to keep an account with them. They can decide to close it for any reason. As far as keeping the money for 90 days, they have to be sure that you have not authorized any payments from the account.

By the way, why would someone hold an "easily negotiable document written by a large well known corporation" for over 180 days without cashing it?

No, I don't work for Chase.
