Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

I worked for this Company for a span of over 3 decades and finally reached a decision to leave. I held the positions of a RM, SRM, DM, SM and agent, which would be equivalent to the MD, TL, SSR and account executive positions that they offer today. After I submitted my resignation the phone calls started coming! I was flown all over the country for interviews, people came to me, and this was all done in an effort to persuade me to change my mind. I can tell you that I was one of the highest paid Field Mangers to ever work for the Company and was not someone that was unsuccessful in this business. I made a good income while at Combined but was "brainwashed" (a term I hear being used a lot in other reports) into believing that this small six figure income was good for the insurance industry. Since leaving Combined several years ago, my family has been blessed with me being able to earn well into the six-figures and should exceed a 1/2 million per year in the very near future.  If you are wondering if the reports posted here are accurate, in my opinion, I would say they are very accurate and I would recommend that anyone looking at getting into the insurance industry weights all their options. To the individuals trying to defend this company, I would say that I admire your loyalty, but wake up!!!  I was a person who also defended the company due to my own self ignorance!! I never looked outside of this company for several decades because I actually believed all the crap that I was telling people and what was told to me over the years. There are many good companies out there to work for in the supplemental insurance industry and yes, other companies actually treat you with respect. There are companies that give you vested renewals that you actually get to keep when you leave.  When I departed with Combined I had to leave all my residuals there (you don't take them with you) and if you are reading this and are an advocate of Combined, I can tell you that my residuals were most likely more than you make in a year. In my opinion a person should keep their residuals, after all you or your team sold it, so you deserve it. No other company that I know decreases your residuals after 5 years (whats that all about?)!! The good news is my residuals at my new company are fast approaching the six-figure mark again.  Conference calls, going out of town, crappy hotels, harassing calls, weekend meetings, working weekends and all the other things I put up with, I actually learned are not normal in the business world. After many years a person begins to think that "this is just the way the business world is"; until you leave and learn different. Since I left, I have enjoyed mornings ( I know this sounds weird but no conference calls to wake up to), diners with my family (no conference calls for rally numbers), children's school events, weekends, vacations (yes, I actually go without feeling guilty and believe it or not we actually take 2 weeks at a time) and time with my family. Besides having a life with my family, the best thing is that I actually make a whole lot more income for my family! In closing, whether you are looking at Combined as possible career  or if you are a current employee and are starting to "wake-up" after reading this good luck with your decision and in what ever direction life takes you. I would like to thank Combined for giving me the ability to earn a decent income over the years and only blame myself for not leaving sooner. Biggest personal regret?? Not leaving sooner! Biggest benefit?? Learning how to successfully sell down the street with a great system that Mr. Stone developed. God Bless!!

I, like the poster, started several decades ago with Combined Insurance. My story is similar; I also started in straight commission direct sales and advanced to executive management solely on my own merits. But my story & take is different than his.

I was looking for a job in a severe recession, just like now (I began in 1983).  I had just completed college, had a decent car and was ambitious - but I had zero marketable skills except a "pleasing personality". So a short interview & demo later, I was off to Chicago! I got a license, was trained by Vince Butz, field trained to a PAL and sent out on my own. I knew nothing about insurance EXCEPT what the company had trained me to say and how to say it.

Well, I sold one small policy the first week, a larger one (the full unit) the second week and within my first month had written 5 new faces in a week! The next month I got my initial award and then I got better and better! Award after award, making money (my record was $1,000 in a week before I had been in the field 6 months - the equivalent of $2,000 in a week now!) I was in the Jet IV within one year and made over $40,000 (again, with the better policies and commissions now, like $80,000 today) my first full year! So I was learning more and earning more and advanced higher and made more and it was all good for over 15 years!

I also want to say that everything I achieved with CICA, from the ups with my career - promotions, recognition, advancement, huge bonuses - to my Ring of Diamonds in both sales and Management and including all the hiccups and even the downs - reckless behavior, poor judgment, and even a demotion and eventual leaving - was all because of me. It's also worth noting many of these posters, both the 30 day wonder and the 30 year person and me too, may never have been hired by any other insurance company because they didn't fit the model that most companies use.

REPEATING: I was the reason I succeeded and I was the reason I failed. Not my manager, not my assignment, not working late, not selling policies to middle America - often in their homes, not working on Saturdays ,,, just me. And I suspect every one of the posters would agree that Combined is not solely to blame or deserves all of the credit. Some of the people in our company - like other companies - aren't perfect but on the whole, they all try pretty hard. The rotten eggs do spoil it for others, but don't they do that in every company?

So why the heck did I come back? CASH FLOW! The first year earnings are tremendous - double from AFLAC or AHL or Colonial based on the same production. I came back in sales, (even thou I was offered a direct hire management position and turned it down), and I made almost $9,000 in my first 2 1/2 months back in the ESM - the way that it's done now. I wanted to prove it to myself and I did and the doors have opened again for me. Will I stay forever ,,, nope. Will I stay awhile ,,, yep. Will I make money & hire + train "green" rookies just like I was ,,,, yep. Does this job beat other outside sales jobs that don't provide some leads or established clients ,,, yep. Is it perfect ,,,, nope. Is Mr Stones system past it's time & will CICA become like the Pony Express ,,, time will tell.

I would just like everyone who reads these posts to realize Combined is a job that you can excel in based solely on your hard work - not office politics or the right color tie or the *amazing* past life experiences you've acquired working at St#rB@cks while you slugged thru that poly sci or communication degree or the fact that once you were great or once you got a gold star and an exceptional rating from your boss ,,, here you have to work. We sell supplemental insurance to small businesses - the Owners and the people who work there. We sell lots of it! We work late at least 2 nights per week. We drive our own cars. We have to learn our craft beyond the classroom prep that company provides.

Combined isn't the perfect career / job - but what is - especially today? I'm looking for people who want to work and give it a try, I will try to train & assist them. I bet some people reading this will say thats what they want, great - email me @ illinoiscombined <at> gmail.com . Others will say it's too hard or sounds rough or it's straight commission or it's not for them. Thats fine with me - I say "thanks just the same" :)

I find myself in the same shoes as you were. As a fairly newbie with the company I have had great success in my few years here, however I can't help to think all the same things you just wrote about. I have learned a lot from Combined, but 7am conference calls to only talk about things we one already knew, and the same thing we talked about last week. Now that I am starting a family I want to put Combined on the back burning to enjoy my family time and vacations! Hopefully something comes along soon so that I don't have to be stuck here for 30 years like you had been. Thanks for posting you have just confirmed everything that I have been thinking
