comcastspecial.com Phishing SSN (social security number) and DOB (date of birth)
Looking for the current Comcast promotion, I just googled "comcast promotion" and the first link in the page pointed to http://www.comcastspecial.com/ without me noticing that this isn't really comcast.com but a totally different site, deceptively made to appear like comcast's.
Thus, I did not suspect anything and attempting to "add to the basket" the package failed (that is the 1st sign of warning!!!), so I called the number next to it: 1-888-211-4309
The woman who answered the phone must have been delighted at the phish who just swallowed the bait... She first asked for ordinary details that every customer service representative would ask and, as we were getting ready to proceed with the actual order, she asked for my SSN (social security number) and date of birth.
Execuse me???
At this point I did not suspect yet that I called an incorrect number (sounded so comcast-like!) but I refused to share this information (classic identity theft type), so I said "thank you" and ended the conversation.
Surprised by Comcast's regquest for SSN, I search the web for similar complaints but found nothing. It was only after I searched for the number 1 (888) 211-4309 that I began to understand how sophisticated phishing has become.
Previously, I expected phishing through email only.
Not anymore... Phishing has reached search engines too. So watch out!
