Cox Communications ripoff Suspect billing practices Phoenix Arizona
After receiving numerous crank calls (most in the early hours of the morning), my husband and I got suspicious and checked online to see if our home phone number was listed anywhere. We have been paying since September 2005 to have our number unlisted. We never thought to check to see if Cox was actually doing what they were charging us for. Lo and behold, Dex Online (local yellow/white page lister) has our number published - name, street address and phone number.
I called Cox about it and was told that once the customer makes the request, they let Dex know to unpublish the number. HOWEVER, Dex doesn't always update their listings so it could take A YEAR for it to show up unlisted, depending on when it was submitted. Yet, Cox charges $2.00 per month but that doesn't necessarily mean you're getting what you're paying for. When I questioned how Cox could charge for a service you clearly don't get, they said the best they could do is credit me $2.00 back for the month I "found" the number on the internet because there was no way for them or me to know the number was published since 2005. But based on their theory that it could take up to a year to actually have Dex update the records, my phone number has been out there for at least 6 -10 months. The rep advised me that if I "pushed" hard enough, I might be able to get 3 months credit. Whatever. It's not worth the effort. $2.00 isn't that much money but if they are doing this to all of their customers, just think of how much extra money they're making for services they aren't providing!

Let me try to explain this... Just because you're paying cox to have an unpublished # doesn't make your number invincible. The number could have gotten on Dex any other way. Maybe you filled out an online form with it, maybe you cheesed someone off and they added you to some list. Now, I'm not saying Cox is perfect and doesn't make mistakes, but maybe the root of this issue lies elsewhere.
