My Diralast Experience

In June of 2013 I decided to construct a building to house machines for metal working, vehicles, and lawn and garden equipment.  I wanted more than a metal building, I wanted something built that would match my house…ie.  same siding, shingle roof, brick front and windows like the front of the house.  I talked to three different companies about my plans.  All agreed the building could be built but only Diralast came in with a reasonable cost.  Rick Dirr and his son, Cory Dirr, both came to see the site and the house and enthusiastically agreed that my project could be done to my specifications.  I checked the Better Business Bureau website and saw that the company had a rating of A-.  Problems that had been reported had been fixed by the company in a timely manner.

Together with Cory Dirr, a contract was drawn up for a 32x48 foot building that would resemble the existing house.  The cost quoted to me was $30,000.  The company asked for half up front to order materials.  The remaining half would be due upon completion.  On July 10, 2013, Rick Dirr came to my house with the typed contract.  I signed the contract and gave him a check for $15,000.  Rick told me at that time that the materials would be ordered from Menard’s and delivered in two weeks.  The trusses would be made to order and delivered with the rest of the package.  After the two weeks passed, I began calling Cory/Rick to find out about the delivery of the materials.  After getting nowhere with either of them, as they seemed to be ignoring my calls, I started calling Menard’s myself.  Six weeks later, the materials were finally delivered but the package was incomplete.  I found out weeks later that Cory never did order the entire package…just enough to get started.

Rick and Cory stated that they would take care of obtaining all permits necessary for the job.  At this point, things were taking so long I didn’t trust anything the Dirrs were telling me.  I called both the county and the township and discovered that nobody had inquired about any permits.  I called Diralast and was assured they would take care of it the very next day.  When I called at the end of the business day I found out I had been lied to yet again.  Even with my repeated calls and double checking with the county and township it took a month to get the building permits in place.

The permit problems were the beginning of the Diralast nightmare.  On October 23, 2013, Cory drew up a second contract stating that the building would be done no later than November 28, 2013 or $350 would be subtracted from the balance for each day it wasn’t done beyond the deadline of 11/28.

I am out a total of $22,000 because Cory stated he would need an additional $7,000 to pay for the concrete once it was poured.  I also have an outstanding bill of $1000 for the gravel that was delivered for the concrete floor that Diralast never paid.   All I have to show for the last eight months is an incomplete roof over a concrete floor that is poorly done.  I am still missing over half of the materials that my original $15,000 check was to pay for.  Below is a list of issues I experienced working with Rick and Cory Dirr.

Constant delays in delivery of materials and work being done

Phone calls ignored by both Cory and Rick

False promises made repeatedly

Outright lies about when work would be done

Cory playing the blame game when things didn’t get done

Cory Dirr was verbally abusive in person and on the phone

Very poor concrete work (not level and footprints in the finish floor)

I had to saw, clean and seal the concrete myself

The only other work done after the concrete was poured on November 6, 2013 was some sheeting was put up on November 14, 2013.  On November 20, 2013, I came home to find the remaining sheeting was gone and I haven’t seen or heard from Diralast since.  I have checked the internet recently and have found similar complaints posted by other customers in October and November of 2013 and early 2014.
