I went to try to return my game to get another because I did not like the one I had purchased. When I got to the store they told me that I would have to "trade it in" and the $63.00 game I bought would be traded in for $25. I called the customer service line and they told me the game could be returned returned only if it had not been opened which in my case the game had already been opened by the store and they did not put a sticker on it when they checked me out. I think from now on I might just spend my money in a better place and go to Walmart.

Making Money

Well, seeing as Gamestop is a profitable corporation, I think it's safe to reason that they are trying to make money.

If you tried to return an open game because it was defective and get another new copy of the same game, we would let you, however to bring a game back and say you don't LIKE it is another matter. As I've stated, it is not the company's responsibility to sell you something you like. It is your responsibility to make wise decisions when spending your money, just like it's our responsibility to avoid losing money because you bought some crappy movie-game and hated it.

If we let everyone return brand new games for a full refund all the time for frivolous reasons, we will lose a large amount of profit. Even if we gave customers ONE DAY to bring the game back, many would find a way to take advantage of this. Even if we take your opened game and resell it as used for five dollars less, we are losing ALL profit on selling that game, because five dollars per new game sold is about what our profit is.

The result of this would be that we would have to start charging EVEN MORE for used merchandise, and since it's already only a difference of 2-6 dollars, NO ONE would bother buying used anymore, especially when they could just return the new copy the next day, and we'd lose THAT profit, and the whole company would likely tank.

Perhaps a worst-case-scenario, but can you see where I'm going with this?

I used to work for Game Stops competition EB Games, which is now part of the company. As a manager, during my time there, the idea of returning opened games and the value of such was highly debated. I say this because, if you think about it GameStope will not take back a game that has been opened yet they will sell a game at full value that THEY OPEN to show off new releases or to reduce shrink, or whatever!! Regardless of the reason for opening, a company should not be able to open products, and use them like so many locations do, and YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN! These games get put into the system setups around the stores and played by employees all the time. I did it...and then turned around and shrinked wrapped the game and stuck a new sticker on it!! I think in a day and age where you instantly lose $35 on a product the moment you walk out the door, there should be a minimum time to return the game without penalty. Especially when they are going to sell it for $5 less than the original price!!!! Now if a customer buys an opened copied it should not be held to the polices for brand new product!!! If this is a problem then stores should do a better job of maintaining their inventory levels to have enough "new" product available. But the powers that be know this is where they get their money...so as usual its all about the money

Opening new cases is lame.

I'm glad other people have sense in the world, though I have something to add about the open-games policy as well, just to elaborate. If we have a sealed copy, we will ALWAYS sell you that one first, unless the employee selling it needs a good kick in the arse.

We do have to open ONE copy of every single game in the store and display the case and keep the game behind the counter, and I understand this frustrates a lot of customers.

It is a policy to prevent our games from getting stolen, which does make sense, but the problem could easily be solved if the company would just ship us cover art for each game we have in stock and allow us to make a 'fake' display case for every new game we would normally have on the floor. That way we could keep all the shrink wrapped copies behind the counter and never have to deal with this complaint again.

Unfortunately, I am but a lowly third-key and Gamestop will not listen to any of my ideas that might could make them a lot of money.

I've purchased video games from just about every major retailer and most of them (including WalMart) have similar return policies. Put simply, if you buy a game from WalMart and open it then you can only exchange it for the same item.

In that respect, WalMart's return policy is similar to GameStop's. You simply cannot expect to buy a game and return it for full value just because you didn't like it. You can exchange an opened game for the same title or trade it to the store for credit.

GameStop's policy can be a bit troublesome because they have a habit of opening games and only putting the case on display. When you take a case up to the counter the cashier will get the game and place it back in the case. If you are somewhat unsure about buying a game and think that you might want to return it, you should request a sealed copy.

Just so you know, Wal-Mart will not let you get a full refund for an opened game either, and they won't offer you twenty-five dollars for it either.

It is not the retailer's responsibility to cover losses due to someone not liking a game that they had nothing to do with the production of. If the game is opened, we cannot resell it, and therefore would be losing a great deal of money if we constantly let people have all their money back every time they didn't like a game.

We are generous enough to allow full refunds on all games purchased USED for the first week, however, seeing as we can still resell it as a used game without losing any money.
