I bought a brand new Hyundai Tiburon SE in 2007 and after just 27k miles on it, as I have babied it, the clutch assembly has failed. I contacted Ed Voyles Hyundai where I bought the car and they said it would cost me $800 just to look at it for me. My Drive Train warranty still has four years left on it and they refused to service the car under warranty and became quite rude. I then looked online and found a slew of other people with the same problem, some with only about 11k on them. This all leads back to a lawsuit that Hyundai lost in 2003 about these faulty clutch assemblies, but to this day, they still put them in their new cars. They are called Dual Mass Flywheel clutch assemblies and many are prone to early failure. After contacting Hyundais corprorate offices I was told that all choices of whether to honor defects and service was completely up to the dealer.

Robert, the service department said they would have to have $800 JUST to look at it. If you look up Hyundai and the Dual Mass Flywheel clutch assembly, you will find that the clutches are the same and are still being used. And yes, I Have been in touch with the attorney's and am already signed on for a new round of suit. I know that some people are heavy on their clutches, but I am 50 and have driven manual all my life and I have Never burned out a clutch...or even come close.

Defective Driver.

There is a reason why warranties generally do not cover clutches.  Because like brakes they are considered a "wear" item and like brakes their life is hugely determined by the drivers driving habbits.  If you are a "bad" driver who rides the clutch you may be lucky to get 5,000 miles out of it.

Now, of course you are going to say that it wasn't your driving habbits and it was 100% Hyundai putting a defective clutch in your car.  So of course you have proof that even though they were sued, and the suit only deals with 2003 models that you suffer from this same defective clutch?  If so pehaps you should contact the same attornies who did the first suit so they can have a second run at Hyundai.

As for the price...Dealers are always going to be a high price.  But even so, I doubt the $800 was just to look at it.  You could probably find another shop to do the replacement for 1/2 the cost.
