Nearly all manual transmissions do not have synchronizers on the reverse gear. So what does this mean to the driver? It means that if anything inside the transmission is still moving when you attempt to shift into reverse, the gears will grind. This is a NORMAL consequence of the design of the transmission. You need to push the clutch pedal all the way down and bring the car to a complete stop before shifting to reverse. This will prevent griding the gears. There may be a very slight noise because the clutch drags a little, but that really won't damage anything. If such dragging happens, it can be reduced by shifting to any forward gear first, then with the clutch still pressed down and the car stopped, immediately go to reverse. Unless major grinding occurs even if you follow these procedures, I would be inclined to side with the dealer that there is nothing wrong with the car (other than it being a Ford).
