" The total owed to me is $2,935.65 please feel free to contact me regarding this matter. "
That sounds more like the total that you are going to end up owing the back. I don't know where you got the absurd notion that a teller can look at a check and determine if it is good. Doesn't matter. What ultimately will happen is that the rules will be followed. The rules say that if you deposit bogus checks or money orders, you are responsible for them.
I'll go out on a limb here and guess that you think it's the bank's fault because you've finally realized that you were scammed by whomever was providing you these money orders. How much untraceable cash did you send them through Westen Union/Moneygram/MoneyPak?

The liability rests with you. A bank teller cannot confirm whether or not a document will be honored by the agency that it is written against. You could be held liable for passing forged or faked documents which is why you should never fall for these cash this and send me so much and keep the rest scam. That's what it was huh?

The US Postal Service does not issue any type of Money Order over $600.00.
I know this for a fact because I needed one for $650.00 and had to buy two. One for $600 and one for $650.00.
Sounds like something shady to me.

Since I'm not involved with this situation I can't say for sure what happened but it's possible that the following occurred.
When the teller "checks" the money order (MO), USPS will confirm that a MO by that number for that amount was sold on that date. However if the MO isn't honored (paid) when then bank forwards it then the MO is returned to the bank and they withdraw that amount from your account. Things that could cause it to not be honored is if the MO was reported as lost or stolen or if it shows as previously cashed.
Or there could have been a problem with the way the MO was made out versus how it was endorsed. The customer service area should be able to tell you why the items were returned or connect you to the department that can tell you. Hope this helps you get this straightened out.

The bank cannot guarantee the money orders are not forgeries, stolen or cancelled. You will need to pursue the party that gave you the money orders. The bank has no liability.
