If your taxes have been taken for over 20 years, you should make an attempt to resolve your debt to the government. A divorce decree can not & does not superseed a student loan debt that you signed. Meaning a civil court can not tell the NYHESC that your ex husband is now responsible for your debt. he may be in contempt of your divorce decree but NYHESC will never hold him responsible. NYHESC can garnish your wages for up to 15% of your disposable pay. So if they offered you a voluntary resolution at a less payment, then you should take advantage of the offer. With a student loan, you are NOT entitled to a monthly payment. Check your promissory notes that you signed when you went to school 20 years ago, title V is the default clause & it states you are responsible for the full balance of the loan. Good luck, but suicide is never the answer to your problems.
