On5/22/08 my wife called longview volkswagen to check on internet special of $17,000 for new jetta and if they had one in stock.(we live at least 50 miles from the dealer and with the price of gas we did not want to make a 100 mile round trip for nothing and this was explained to them)they said they had them in stock so we said we would be right down.When we arrived the salesman had no knowlage of the special but he would show us the jettas and check with manager about the sale price.The sales manager had no knowlage of the special and the salesman had us show him where we found it.Once we showed him the add he showed us cars that would qualify for sale price we drove one and decided to buy.He then wanted me to sign credit papers without showing any figures I refused so he reluctently showed me the price of $19,500 i said no way i wanted the internet price he said they sold the last one of those 2 weeks earlyer and the only keep 1 of those $ 17,000 specials at a time.Thats funny 5 min earlyer they had no knowlage of the special. if i wanted they would get me one in a day or so i told them thats why we called to make sure they had one instock 100 miles for nothing! Even the poor salesman said this was close to false advertising then they tried to pass of a used jetta or mazda at this price. what a RIP-OFF. DONT BAIT AND SWITCH ME OR YOU WILL BE ON RIPOFF .COM

In the rebuttal she says the management has change; however, in their own website they say it is family owned and operated for 40 years. See this quote direct from their website: "Our Longview Volkswagen dealership has been family-owned and operated for over 40 years, making Gorman McCracken VW is one of the most experienced car dealerships in East Texas. "
I wonder which statement is true? Their website ad or the rebuttal? They can't both be true statements.
It doesn't really matter. Dealerships that pull this type of bait and switch (advertising a vehicle for a price that doesn't exist to bring you in and sell you a higher priced one) are a dime a dozen out there. The standard excuse "we have changed management" seems to be SOP in the industry. Does anyone believe that they have changed management? No.
The only thing that can be done is exactly what the original author did - walk out when the dealer tries the bait and switch or any of the financing games. Walk out before you sign anything - no matter how far you have come to see this common vehicle scam updated for the internet age. If enough people refuse to do business with dealerships like this, maybe the dealerships will finally get it and do the right thing. (But don't hold your breath.)
