Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
HHGREGG advertised for their Grand Opening a Washer/Dryer pair for $298.00. I went to the store and knew that I specifically wanted that set at that price. First of all, when I walked in the store it was like walking into a used car lot, my sister & I were greeted by a swarm of people saying "can I help you"? It was overwhelming.

I told the salesman why I had visited the store.....to purchase the w/d that was advertised in the paper for $298.00. He walked us towards it and in approx. 5 seconds he had said it was not the best w/d set and that he would reccommend a better one, I wasn't offended at first because I appreciated him showing me the "better" w/d. After talking a while I told him I only needed the basic w/d and had decided I wanted the one in the ad (Roper/Whirlpool).

He became nervous and began to obviously lie, he said "well, I really don't think we have any in the warehouse" of course we asked if he would check, he came back qickly and said "no, I'm sorry there's none in the warehouse" we both knew that he didn't really check. So we asked him if he could call the Matthews & Concord stores and he again acted nervous and said "well sure but I don't think they'll have it" I asked him to take my name & number and when this set is available call me" he said okay, but never took out a pen or paper to get my information, he was acting really weird. So we walked away.

I told my sister I wanted to leave, but she persisted saying she wanted to get another sales person to help us. Another person came right up to us and asked "can I help you" we explained that we wanted that particular w/d set. He preceeded to say that it was the worst w/d ever and that he wouldn't feel right selling it to me. So my next question was "why do you carry it at all if it's of poor quality" He said "that's a good question, and really this is not my area, I'm not supposed to be over here" It became comical.

We ventured around the store and saw two other couples who came to see the $298 deal being lured away to the more expensive w/d.

Then we were approached by two other men wanting to assist us. I told them that I only came in for the w/d set and I couldn't seem to get anybody to sell it to me. One man walked over to the w/d and said "let me check the warehouse" he came back and said "yes we have it"! So standing right there we started writing up the order when the first man who we encountered walked up and interrupted by saying to the guy who was helping me "that set is not in stock I've already checked" So my sister chimed in and said "yes it is, he has already checked" so the 1st salesman asked the one who was helping me, how many was in stock, the guy said 10, I didn't care how many because I only wanted one!

Finally we completed the order I paid for the Roper/Whirlpool set and at the very end of the transaction a woman who was training the guy from Columbus asked the guy with surprise in her voice "did you just sell her the Roper"?! He said "yes, that's what she wanted" and we left the store and on Sunday afternoon the delivery guys delivered the w/d set to my house for a total of $374.00.

The guy who finally helped did vaguely admit during a conversation that they were not supposed to sell the Roper. I told him that I worked in Sales and I know some of the tactics but this was ridulous if you advertise it you have to sell it if the customer wants it. I hope he didn't get fired he is a nice guy!

Now I'm wondering two things How bad is the Roper & why do they sell it and why do they boldly advertise it for the Grand Opening if it's a terrible product.

I feel awful about my experience at the store and I will never shop there again. I will not recommend it to anyone and I will tell this story every where I go.

My $0.02 I appologize for your treatment and experience

I'm a current employee and manager at a store in a different market for the company. I appologize for your treatment and experience. Due to the new location we occasionally have some not so well trained staff on hand just to meet customer traffic for the grand openings. The proper thing we do is if we are out of stock on a currently advertised model we give you the next best model at the same price (either a frigidaire or estate set). The Roper pair is a great set for the money but realistically they don't meet many people's needs. It's a small 12lb (2.6cu ft) capacity in the washer with one load size (water level). The dryer is 30 minute timed dry...high heat only. Frankly I could do maybe two pairs of jeans or about 6 t-shirts. I understand about your not ever wanting to step foot in our stores again, however, not all stores in the company are the wame way nor do the salespeople act the same way (at least in my store these people don't stay employed long either).

One person does not make a Store

The person you had this dealing with was Johnnie Adams a Manager in Training. He comes across as a slick oily used car salesman and that would be a good first impression. The customer just had the misforture to run into a bad apple. There are a number of us that work for HHGREGG that don't want to put up with this sort of person and we put the customer first.

I would like to add that George, the General Manager in Pineville, NC called my office this morning to acknowledge my complaint and ask if there was anything he could do to help. Of course there's not a lot that can be done to change a first impression and I will never shop at the store again but I would like to at least let everyone know that he called.
