Complaint Review: International Magazine Service Of Great Lakes - Direct Reader's Guild - West Dundee Illinois

A family member of mine was contacted by this company and was told that they had to confirm their order. My family member was a bit hesitant and needed to seek further information to confirm the order. It was later discovered that there was no order placed with this company and I called on behalf of my family member. I spoke to a woman named lisa and she was very rude, telling me that she had a voice recording of the "confimation". I told her that whatever she had, to cancel. She said she could not because it was a binding contract. She instructed me to not contact her anymore via any means, and to date we have not. They proceeded to harass my family member and I told my family member to tell Direct Reader's guild to not contact her anymore and that their magazine scheme would not work with us. We proceeded to contact our state attorney general who helped us contact Direct Reader's Guild (i did not want to violate Lisa's request to not contact). After several correspondences I though the situation would be taken care of, but we later received a payment booklet for some magazines and the magazines started showing up. We tried to contact the magazine publishers to tell them that we did not order them, and they directed us to another company - INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE SVC, 1 N SUPERIOR ST., SANDUSKY, OH 44870 800-654-9204. So it seems that these people are making orders in people's name through this other company. From what I have read and the way I understand it, people are also being billed twice for the order as well, once from direct readers guild and then from International Magazine SVC. I will not pay either company any money for something I did not order nor want. We told them long before anything started showing up that we did not want it. They had a chance to stop it a long time ago. It is not a good business practice to order something for someone and pay for it before you get your money. Shame on Direct Reader's Guild for doing business this way. I would rather spend thousands in court, than to pay this scam company 1 dime. It's a matter of principle.

Under the laws that regulate my state, any products received unsolicited are considered gifts. I believe this to also include canceled products that continue to be received. The company is not registered with my state to be making telemarketing phone calls either. Check your state laws and contact your state attorney general for Consumer Fraud Protection. It is also under that laws of my state that any litigation be made in my state, should there be legal action taken, given the supposed "Contract" is for persons residing in my state.

The Better Business Bureau also reports "unsatisfactory" rating for Direct Reader's Guild.
