I have only now come across this report, otherwise I would have answered ten years ago. I am the winner of the $20,000 prize of the year 2004 in Philadelphia competition. I was indeed admitted to the Emergency room and had to remain there from Saturday to Monday and only discharged when I insisted that my light back to the UK was booked and paid for. I was taken ill after collapsing during the night, after the Gala Dinner when the Shiirelles performed. It turned out that it was probably an allergic reaction, though the doctors discovered certain problems that needed furhter investigation. I am happy to report that I a now perfectly well. Also, I was awarded $20,000 for my poem 'Dark Land of Light'. I firmly believet thatmy poem had great merit and was sorry not to have been able to read it myself. A woman I met there, Debbie, read it out in my place. I did live in Spain at the time and recently re-located to the UK. Though I unerstand that the methods of this company may be appear to be dubious and would-be poets are encouraged when maybe theyshould not be, this doesn't mean that 'serious' poets can't enter and win - if they are goof enough.
For me, winning the prize was wonderful.
