I find everything you said in your report to be absolutely correct. i am a student at Atterbury Job Corps. I am actually trying to leave and have been told I cannot. If I do decide to leave I have to have my own transportation; and am 4 hours away from home. It is also true that some students come here to avoid jail time, still come here and do the same things that could possibly land them in prison. Anyway, it is totally unfair to promise all these dreams to young people and not warn them of the negatives; but false advertisement can't be a claim. This situation totally upsets me and I would never recommend this place to anyone. The part you said about people coming, not learning, and getting out easily is true as well. I asked to get on a fast track to getting out of here and was offered it. I also know of a young lady who is 83% in here trade; almost done basically; and she will be leaving here soon with certifications that she really knows nothing about. I don't know what else to say, but all your information is totally right!

I recently AWOLed out of the Dayton Job Corps program. I was there almost a year. I had completed my trade, and was enrolled at Sinclair Community College as part of their ACT program. The staff at this center was a nightmare. The majority of them didn't do anything for anyone they didn't like. I had to go to security multiple times for racism-related issues, and nothing was ever done. They keep a well-known alcoholic employed as a residential senior, even though reports have been made that she was intoxicated while on the job, and even had alcohol in her possession on center. For a drug-and-alcohol-free center, it was extremely easy to find marijuana on center. My friend and I would smoke weed at least four times a day ON CENTER, and nobody ever said anything. Students would come on center drunk every weekend, and most staff would just tell them to sleep it off, even if they were minors. I went to Job Corps married. Our marriage had been falling apart for over a year. My first month or so, I left my wife, and staff (after telling me that her husband left her, and all men were scum) told me that if I didn't get back with her, that I would be terminated. Finally, a month ago I decided that Job Corps was just a waste of my time, and I left. They do nothing about bullying, but if you get assaulted and defend yourself, you get kicked out. Is that right? No. After getting picked on for months and having nothing done about it, another of my friends was beaten up, and only put the other guy in a headlock to stop the fight. He was kicked out for this. It's ridiculous that the rules here are so warped that some kid that just wants an education can't get it because he was assaulted. Job Corps is worthless. The only member of the staff that wasn't a piece of crap was Chef Newman, the Culinary Arts instructor. If they ever get rid of him, God help them...

Hello, this is Penndawt Carneal. I'm an OCT-College student under the Job Corps' OCT sponsorship. I live at the Job Corps - Pittsburgh centre while attending college.
Here is how I can see the government's involvment in the program: They are practically AWoL to their own program. The government is there, but doesn't seem to have it's attendance straight. This program doesn't take a government to run nationwide. The same vocational trades & advanced academics can be learned can be offered & legit if this program was what I believe it's best as, a private & non-profit program.
Here's some government/budget wastes in my centre, in Pittsburgh. These are assets used on our center that have nothing to do with the center's or program's productivity.
- The security department has three golf-carts that act as "police cars" driven all around our centre. One of these "police golf carts" even has a siren. Our center has four secuirty guards on-centre. Since one of them has to be at the gate, and one at the switchboard, and I believe one has to be in the security desk in the security building, there's one one remaining security guard who can use his legs or one of the three golf-carts. Why would one security guard able to walk need three golf carts?
- Our center has spent money on a wind mill that they use to "preserve energy". If that wind mill going to get those students to pass their GED & trade certification, then I'll support it. I don't see the revelance.

New Cumberland,#5UPDATE EX-employee responds

I have read the rebuttels from students who recieved what they were promised, and I am really glad for them. However, this must vary from Center to Center because my sister had a horrible (and terrifying) time at job corps. Of course it's not suppose to be a "walk in the park" but she walked around fearing her own safety, with no help from employeess. I am not an ex employee, but my sister spent 48 hours in job corp hell. Since I've already written a report on it (http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/ripoff146349.htm) I wont go into further detail about the specific situation; but for all readers, be wary before signing up- check out the center before you go and see for yourself.

I am currently a student in Job Corps... I am there of my own free will and not just to get out of jail. Job Corps is alot of things to alot of people. Mostly, it is a second chance. I get the chance to obtain my High School Diploma, and, after I complete my Cisco training, will have 36 credit hours toward college. Job Corps has alot of rules, yes, but that's geared toward safety and to getting you "job ready" People mature at job corps. If you are lazy and just are there to milk the system... you won't leave the program with anything, you will have wasted all that time, and if you continually get negative on your progress rating each month, you won't be in the program long anyway. Job Corps is NOT a waste of tax payers money!!!! I can look around every day and see people who had no options, thought that they would never get anywhere, and people who have made stupid choices. All this is wiped clean, it's not what you did before the program, it's what you do while you're in it... I am extremely grateful for this chance to start over and get my life straight. I'm not stupid, just made some stupid choices. Go visit a Job Corps... Collbran, CO is the #1 center, you will see a whole bunch of young adults with shirts tucked in, good haircuts, and belts. I BET that you won't be able to tell the "jail kids" from the ones there by choice... You only get out of the program what you put in.

Job Corp is not a perfect program, no programs are perfect and probably will never become perfect. I am currently a Job Corp student and proud to be. Yes, many of the students there had a choice, yes, a CHOICE, of whether to go to Job Corp or go to jail and they chose to go to Job Corp for reasons unknown, maybe just to avoid jail, maybe to better themselves or maybe just to trick the system, who knows. Job Corp is being used as kind of a probation to introduce those young adults to society and help them to better themselves. I went into Job Corp to better myself, it was my decision and I have a perfect record so I'm not just trying to defend anybody. Job Corp has taught me personally how to get along with people from different backrounds. Yes, there are theives and law breakers in Job Corp and they may never change, but, hey, they're everywhere. It's part of adapting to be a fully functioning member of society. There's always going to be that jerk off down the street that steals and treats people like crap and that person who simply milks the government for all their worth, you can't escape those, you have to learn to deal with it. I have been in my Vocation for about 2 months and I am practically complete, there are people in that class that have been there for 8 months or more and I passed them up in my first month. Some are lazy and milk the program and some try their hardest but can't learn as fast as others. The program has worked wonders for many and provided them a very promising future and others use it as a crutch, just as a way to avoid having to be responsible. I think the program is awesome and you learn alot about different careers but more importantly alot about yourself it all just depends on how much you want it.
