Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
We were visited by a sales Rep at our home after viewing a demonstration at the county fair. We were given a hard sale and convinced we should purchase their equipment and that we would save a considerable sum on cleaning products and rust removal agents due to our extremely hard well water. After loans, finance etc the entire bill totaled $3651.00. It was installed in Fall of 1993.

We have since replaced 4 timers and shear pins (the only part NOT covered by life time warranty). We spend more money per year on products such as "Iron Out" "Zud" and other rust removal products for our fixtures and clothing. (We had a very reliable system prior to purchasing the Rain Soft)

We were also told to purchase and install an additional filtering system due to the "Rotten egg" smell. (acidizing our well fixed that, the filter did not). We were told to add bleach to our brine tank for "live rust" as the rain soft did not take care of that.

We now experience EXTREMELY salty water, which is unfit to drink, cook or bath in. (Husband showered in the "Dead Sea" this morning. We will call for service tomorrow...Bets are on the timer again!!

I wouldn't recommend this company to the worst of my enemys!!!

After doing some investigation at the office of your claims, I found your file and reviewed it. There were a few service records in your file, however the only charge you ever had were service call charges. you had one charge for a timer motor only because it was out of warranty. On that same service call, they gave you a break and didn't charge a service call that time. You were even sent a survey that you had to fill out and the last section you checked that you would recommend the sales person to someone else, you would recommend the dealership and you would recommend RainSoft to someone else. In the additional comments section you wrote: "We've had additional trouble with "live iron" in our water which the unit is not able to eliminate even after treating brine tank with bleach, so we contiue to have rust & yellowing of our white clothes- still need to rinse in "iron out" on a regular basis" So you did understand that the water treatment system is not able to take out bacteria. (live iron) The only way to get rid of this bacteria is chlorination of your well. The last service was 9/21/07 the service tech at the time fixed your unit and you were charged $82.50 for the service call, but were not charged for any parts. At the time of the service call you opted to have us send you a bill for the services and were sent several bills there after that you ignored. Bill dates sent were: 10-11-07 12-14-07 1-14-08 3-4-08 4-15-08 6-3-08 7-08-08 After not getting the bill paid our company just wrote off the debt as a bad debt and marked it in the file as such. You must have had a change of heart after reading this last rebuttle to the filed report against us, because shortly I filed a rebuttle to your report we got a check in the mail from you paying off the debt that was owed since 9-21-07! We appreciate that very much! We will consider this payment as case closed on this matter and if there is anything else we can do for you please feel free to call us and like I said before, if you are still having problems with iron bacteria, please call us and I will gladly send you a pamphlet that I made up about Iron & Sulfur bacteria as well as a step by step instruction on how to chlorinate your well. Sincerely, Rob T. Lake Country Rainsoft Service/Installation Tech Perham, MN

Ok so I would like to start out saying that I work as an Installation/Service Tech for this company. I purchased a home that had the treatment system in it prior to working for Rainsoft. I believe that Rainsoft is the best water treatment system out there on the market because of the Resin that is inside the tanks. The resin that's inside the tank is very expensive and technologically advanced compared to your standard water softner that you may purchase at your local hardware or big name brand hardware store. For that reason with all the technology that is involved in the development of a great water treatment system the cost for them is slightly higher than that of a $700 machine that will only last a year or two. So goes for car industry, you can buy a subcompact or you can buy a luxury sedan. Now I have some things to say about your comments in here and will include them after your comments in quotes. I am not sure how hard your water is or was at the time of the demonstration and your agreement to purchase the equipment, but following the instructions on the equipment is essential for its functioning. We have since replaced 4 timers and shear pins (the only part NOT covered by life time warranty). We spend more money per year on products such as "Iron Out" "Zud" and other rust removal products for our fixtures and clothing. (We had a very reliable system prior to purchasing the Rain Soft) My rebuttal to this one is simple. Surely you do not expect to go purchase a car for $20,000.00 and never have to fix it at one time or another? I don't understand why this major investment is difficult to understand that on a mechanical device things will eventually wear out and need fixing? It in no way is a miracle machine that never needs service just because you paid more money for it than a cheaper one? You can either buy a subcompact car and be ok with it or you can by a luxury sedan and enjoy it? You drive your car many miles and eventually have to replace the tires that can cost you anywhere from $300 to $900 depending on your brand and type of car? Don't forget you have oil changes and filters and preventive maintenance of it as well, all that cost you money to run it every day. Same goes for your Rainsoft unit that runs EVERY day for you. I hope that you are not disappointed that the manufacturer of the car you bought will not replace the tires for you when they wear out or pay for your preventive maintenances and then file a rip off report on them? The timer motors that you speak of run every minute of every day, essentially the heart of the machine. I have just recently serviced systems that have not had anyone touch them in 23 years, that's awesome! So think about this for a minute. If that little timer (size of a pack of gum) ran steady for 1 year turning every minute, it has ran a total of 8,766 hours nonstop and in 23 years that is 201,618 hours nonstop, that's impressive! I figured this out for you. The timer motors are now $51.95, I am not sure without looking up your file what they were back then and if it was 4 shear pins, they are 0.65/each. So in 10 years I am assuming since you filed this report in 2003 your only parts that you have put into this machine are $207.80 for the timer motors and $2.60 for shear pins. Now I have to tell you that the shear pins are made out of brass and are designed to break if there is a problem simply because the motor on these machines are so powerful that if something went wrong they would most certainly twist the head up. Not to mention they run everyday and are $134.00 each. So I would rather a 65 cent part break to cover from damaging a $134.00 part. Wouldn't that be nice if there was a $100 part that would break to save a $1500 transmission on our cars? I would gladly pay that anyday! Also if you read your warranty card about the lifetime parts here is exactly what it states: ELECTRICAL PARTS ARE WARRANTED AGAINST DEFECTS IN MANUFACTURE FOR FIVE YEARS AND PRO-RATA WARRANTED FOR AN ADDITIONAL FIVE YEARS. The treatment tank and valves, mineral, & brine tank are warranted against defects in manufacture for the lifetime of the FIRST PURCHASER at retail. People forget to read their warranty information? We were also told to purchase and install an additional filtering system due to the "Rotten egg" smell. (acidizing our well fixed that, the filter did not). We were told to add bleach to our brine tank for "live rust" as the rain soft did not take care of that. Chances are that you were asked to purchase an additional filtering system (Iron Filter) because you have more that likely have high iron in your water. Anytime that you have high iron in your water there is almost ALWAYS live iron bacteria (not live rust) and or sulfur bacteria present. Before I even worked for Rainsoft I purchased a home with this treatment system in it, I was frustrated and kept blaming my Rainsoft. However it was not the equipment that was failing, it was me! After some discussion with a service guy before being an employee for them I come to find out that these systems are designed to remove the minerals from our water that makes the water hard. THEY DO NOT REMOVE A LIVING ORGANISM. Which is bacteria, be it Iron or Sulfur. Also after a costly mistake of not taking care of the bacteria problem soon enough in my well, I paid for it dearly by having my submersible pump and the pipe and all my wiring take a 96 foot dive to the bottom of my well casing. So after all this frustration of my showers turning orange from the live bacteria, spending $1800 for my well, and countless loss of hair falling out from frustratedly pulling at it, I did research. Here is the information that I found about bacteria that I pass on to other customers that have staining and bacteria problems: Iron Bacteria: Iron bacteria are generally more common than sulfur bacteria because iron is abundant in ground water. Iron bacteria are oxidizing agents and combine iron or manganese dissolved in ground water with oxygen. A side effect of the process is a foul smelling brown slime that can cause unpleasant odors, corrode plumbing equipment and fixtures, and clog well screens and pipes. If conditions are right, the bacteria can grow at amazing rates, rendering an entire well system useless in just a few months. Signs that may indicate an iron bacteria problem include yellow, red or orange-colored water; rusty slime deposits in toilet water holding tanks; and strange smells resembling fuel oil, cucumbers, or sewage. Sometimes the odor will only be apparent in the morning or after other extended periods of non-use. Sulfur Bacteria: There are two categories of sulfur bacteria; sulfur oxidizers and sulfur reducers. Sulfur-reducing bacteria are the more common. Sulfur-oxidizing bacteria produce effects similar to those of iron bacteria. They convert sulfide into sulfate, producing a dark slime that can clog plumbing. Sulfur-reducing bacteria live in oxygen deficient environments. They break down sulfur compounds, producing hydrogen sulfide gas in the process. The distinctive "rotten egg" odor of hydrogen sulfide gas is the most obvious sign of a sulfur bacteria problem. Hydrogen sulfide gas is foul smelling and highly corrosive. As with odors caused by iron bacteria, the sulfur smell may only be noticeable when the water hasn't been run for several hours. **If the odor is only present when hot water is run, sulfur reducing bacteria could be building up in the water heater. Blackening of water or dark slime coating the inside of the toilet tank may also indicate a sulfur bacteria problem. Iron bacteria and sulfur bacteria contaminations are often difficult to tell apart because the symptoms are so similar. To complicate matters, sulfur-reducing bacteria often live in complex symbiotic relationships with iron bacteria, so both types may be present. Fortunately, both types of bacteria can be treated using the same methods. We now experience EXTREMELY salty water, which is unfit to drink, cook or bath in. (Husband showered in the "Dead Sea" this morning. We will call for service tomorrow...Bets are on the timer again!! I wouldn't recommend this company to the worst of my enemys!!! I apologize that you have had some problems with your machine and not been able to be helped with your problems or been able to discuss them with some sort of resolution. However I don't think that it's fair that you file a rip off report about Rainsoft because you fail to see that there are some preventive maintanence issues that you need to acknowledge & things you have failed to do or even failure in reading your warranty information before filling this report. We have over 10,000 satisfied customers out of our office. I also would not recommend our company to my worst enemy, simply because our enemies do not deserve great water! :) I would recommend this to all my friends and family. After understanding that it takes some effort on my part to make the operation of these machines work, it makes it a whole lot easier. These are not mircle machines you have installed in the corner of your basement that you can forget about. Like any other machine like your furnace, hotwater heater, washer, dryer etc there comes some responsibility on your part as the consumer to ensure they are being taken care of instead of neglected and being angered by a breakdown. Out of my own frustration as a consumer before working for this company, I put together a pamphlet on bacteria and step by step instructions on how to resolve this very unpleaseant situation. So please feel free to call us and we can mail one out to you if you are one of our customers with concerns of live iron/sulfur bacteria problems. Heck you can even call me there and I would be glad to discuss your concerns over the phone. Sincerely, Rob Lake Country Rainsoft Perham, MN
