When I spoke with Mr. Lockman about purchasing a fasting package at his center in Panama we had a discussion about what was available at the center and what I could expect for my money.  I was also told that if I paid up front, I would lock in the rate "forever" and receive a discount.  In regards to the center I was advised that there would be:

  • Morning meditation classes

  • Fresh, organic fruit and produce

  • Intelligent lectures regarding health (this is obviously opinion but...

  • Clean linens

  • Exercise program during after the initial re-feeding period.  He also said they stressed high intensity interval training (HIIT) which I asked about.  He probably doesn't even really know what that is.

  • Frequently had malfunctioning health equipment, lack of proper equipment, and reused equipment to save money (yuck).

I attended my fast in 2011.  The reality was:

  • no meditation classes at all (and after a very brief time of becoming acquainted with Mr. Lockman you are relieved because one does not want to spend any more time with him than necessary).

  • produce was not frequently not organic, and sometimes purchased from local grocery stores in town.  From brochures you are under the impression the food comes from local farmers or fruit tress on the property, and what was served was often unripe or poor quality.  If people haven't eaten for 20 to 30 days and are complaining about the food, that's a pretty good indication there is an issue.

  • He angers quickly if you have any questions about his lectures, or rather, any questions about his responses to your questions.  He would often "bs" and say anything to support his arguments; also frequently brags about himself.

  • Towels were moldy and smelled strongly, which is quite stressful when in a fasted state.  Linens and blankets also had stains.

  • No real exercise area (akin to a driveway) with some yoga mats and jump ropes you could grab. There was no exercise program at all.

  • Frequently lacked hot (or even warm) water.  This is not unheard of in Latin American countries but when paying a certain amount in that same country... When getting to and into the shower takes extraordinary effort on your part because of the fasted state, and then you get in and it's ice water, and this lasts for weeks, it's not acceptable.  At least not for the price.

  • The entire time my group fasted he would take our daily temperature and make readings and tell us about our health state based on temperature.  Everyone arriving had a temp of about 93-95 degrees and everyone commented how odd that was.  He insisted it was correct and told us why we were all that cold.  Come to find out after the fast (I think another patron had brought a thermostat and compared readings) but he finally agreed that it wasn't working.  Also would check our blood sugar once per week and reuse needles for us and things that go in our ear (I forgot what it was now).  He would separate these out but still... gross and probably unsanitary just to save some pennies.  It's especially disturbing when you find out how much he had to pay for everything (so little - much less than you would even imagine) compared to what he charges his guests.  And further, he frequently insists that "he doesn't make any money" and "doesn't take a salary" and he's a "not for profit" (please ask to see some legal, government papers with that one), and on and on.

  • Completely toxic emotional environment: I cannot stress enough that amount of adrenaline and stress you feel from such emotions when in a fasted state.  Mr. Lockman yelled at guests ("F*ck you!")  Also called guests absurd, idiots, and stupid.  He seemed particularly reactive if you questioned anything he said and did not take his word to be the be all, end all.

During the sales phase, Mr. Lockman is very persuasive, gentle, and supportive.  Once you are a captive audience to his ego however that quickly changes.  I do believe in his heart of hearts Mr. Lockman has benevolent intentions however he seems to suffer from grand self-delusions and may even believe his own lies.  Unfortunately this does not change reality for the rest of us.

I could go on and on with criticisms of Tanglewood and Mr. Lockman but hopefully this serves as enough material for the general purpose.  Buyer beware, I recommend staying away.
