Many years ago (circa 1978) I witnessed a demonstration to show how easily a check can be forged. A personal check was written in ink. The person then used a Kodak product, possibly a lens cleaner, that removed the ink entirely and left the check as if nothing had ever been written on it. Using this technique would explain why the money order was made out to someone else.
My wife and I now use our bank's BillPay service instead of writing personal checks or getting money orders. The checks are harder to alter, we have an undisputable record of who the check was made out to and when it was mailed, and the recipient does not have our account information.

A personal check is also a safe & secure way to pay rent.
"I had proof with the money order stub and Wal-Mart receipt that I had paid rent"
Those items are proof that you purchased the money order but are not proof you paid the rent.
A subpoena is issued by the court not the sheriff's office.
Did you fill out the money order in ink?
