My husband and I were searching craigslist for rental houses in our area. On May 11, 2010 I received the following email to a listing of a house in Missouri City, TX. I received the very same email AGAIN on June 2, 2010 on a completely different listing of a house on the other side of Houston. Keep reading to see the response back from the email after this one...
Hello (name),
Thanks for taking the time to email me about the place.
We thought we had the place rented last week to a young couple, but communication has dropped off. you are the first person to email about it since we put it back on the market . It would only be fair that we gave you the first shot at the property.
Normally, we would prefer a year lease, but would also be open to shorter terms. I'm sure that you will want to see the property before making a final decision. I would simply give you the address and let you swing by, but my husband is against blindly advertising an empty home online. Rest assured the home has been up kept properly and had a good cleaning and fresh coat of paint. Basic utilities are currently on, but we expect that you would get them put into your name fairly quick.
If you want to go ahead and schedule a time to see the property, go to the link below and print off the free copy of your report. Your score isn't necessarily important, we're just interested in seeing that there are no evictions / landlord related judgments.

I am very open as far as appointments go to show the property. Any morning after 10am is fine. Just let me know when you have everything printed and be sure to leave me a contact number to reach you at and any desired time. I will call you to confirm a time and choose a place to meet.
Thanks for looking,
Ernestine Cooke
Hi there, Ernestine
I'm so sorry for this...but the couple that was looking at the place originally, actually came back and put their deposit down. I mentioned that things have been hectic around here... I guess they had been calling me frantically, and my phone was in a spot in our house that, for whatever reason, gets really bad reception...so I didn't even notice they were trying to call back. Anyways, they just got back in touch with my husband and signed the lease, and put down the deposit and everything. I'm really sorry for all this confusion.
We own multiple properties in the area so we will definitely keep you on the top of the list if anything else comes available soon.
Thanks,

I do not know if National Credit Report directly has anything to do with the craigslist scam. However, there are scams on craigslist where they are posing as property managers, etc., and posting rental property ads on cl. I found what I thought was a great rental property yesterday, and sent an email about it. I received the following email back:

I thought this was strange because I had already told them in my email times that I would be available to view the property, and why would we discuss a place to meet... why not just meet AT the property? These made me think it might be a scam. So I went to the web site they sent me "rental-verification.com/rentalverification" and I was directed to NationalCreditReport.com. I was leery about giving any of my personal info so I googled National Credit Report Scam and found this website and a couple others. So whether National Credit Report IS actually in on the scam or not, I don't know, but because I was directed to their site FROM the craigslist scam ad I won't be using National Credit Report in the future.

To begin with national credit report has nothing to do with the craigslist listing, and how can they lure people to they're websites, youre sounding as if they hypnotized you into putting your information into theyre website to view your credit report, and i know for a fact that the phones are answered,it just surprises me that the only ppl that claim these accusations are the ones that got charged the 14.95 because they were to late to call in and cancel within the 7 days of the trial period, its a 7 day trial period and it clearly states that on the website, its not in small print at all it actually says it more then once about the trial period and how u will be charged a auth fee of 14.95 when you first sign up and for those who dont read nor understand the difference between an auth hold and charge on theyre acct theyre the ones that get upset, and u contradicted yourself because at first you were saying how no one answered then you said (they say the only way to cancel is through phone and they didnt do anything to verify your identity when you called) well which is it,and you mean to tell me that everytime a person signs up for the acct they change the wording of the terms and conditions from weeks to months, come on now how ridiculous can you be,lets just be honest why u really wrote this report because you probably didnt get your 14.95 that you needed so bad, there's no need to discredit the compnay because you didnt get your way,how selfish of you.I know for a fact that this company is very legitimate and that there a live operaters that do answer the phone from 9am-5pm eastern standard time and im sure they have plenty customers that dont like they're service and plenty customers that do like theyre service just like any other company you have in america,im sure sprint or t-mobile has plenty complaints against them that dosent mean they dont do theyre job or that they're fraud,i have recieved excellent service from Nationalcreditreport.com and was never preassured into anything and didnt have a problem speaking with anyone or cancelling my account. And it didnt take many calls to do so,just one with a 2minute conversation.

I check ripoffreport.com frequently so when I viewed a 6-2009 negative report on National Credit Report.com I was apprehensive until I noticed that the phone number for the company used by that consumer had numbers inverted. So, I took a chance and was happy with the outcome. First, I called the correct number and went directly to the person to cancel the account. I wanted to see how fast I would be connected prior to even ordering service. I had a 10 minute wait before talking to a human.
Next, I whipped out my credit card an ordered a trimerge (3 in 1 they also call it). After creating a file I received the report within a few minutes. A couple of days later, I contacted them to cancel. This time there was no wait to talk to a human. Yes, they tried to give me what I would call a "soft sell" on a monitoring service. I only had to respond "no" once. (No car salesman pitches where they keep asking.)
Not only did the person give me a confirmation number, but I also received an email within a few minutes confirming the canx. I had offered to pay for the one time service but they said that I did not need to do so.
So, in the "for what it is worth department", my experience was positive. However, if there is a problem with the confirmation or canx, I'll be back on ripoffreport.com toot sweet!!
My thanks for ripoffreport.com for providing an outlet for consumers.

For fairness and accuracy, it occurs to me that since Brian called my phone number, that may have been sufficient to "verify my identity," to cancel, but there was no direct questioning to verify my identity. Reputable companies do not usually verify identity so indirectly. Ebay and Banks have very thorough processes of verifying identity over the phone - which are similar to the questions you are asked to verify your identity to retrieve a credit report - however, they do not use just a phone call, they ask for specific information that can confirm your identity.
