I recieved a letter today from NCO Financial Systems stating that Emergency Prof. Services had sold certain accounts owed to it to NCO. It also stated that I could settle the account for a lump sum of 50% the total balance listed. When I went to check the account on the web site listed on the letter, my "unique registration code" would not work. I have no outstanding bills that I am aware of, and I haven't recieved any phone calls as of yet. The only thing that I can possible connect it to is an emergency room visit from 2 years ago that I had paid in full after it was sent to a different collections agency. I had a nasty dispute with my insurance agency about it but went ahead and paid it in order to keep my credit report clean. I haven't called to speak to a representative yet, because I had a feeling something wasn't right. I'm not sure what I need to do to get this taken care of... Please, any info you could give me would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Even though you paid the hospital bill for the emergency visit, the emergency room physician usually has a separate bill. You either never got the bill, or you may have figured it was included in the bill you paid the hospital. Many doctors are sending out only one bill, then they turn you over to the collection agency. They should at least send you bills for three months in case the first one didn't get to you, but many don't.

The first step is always to request that the debt be validated. Send a letter via Registered Mail with Return Receipt to this company with a simple statement of: Per the Fair Debt Reporting Act I am requesting that this debt be validated. By federal law they must stop all collection activity until they respond with validation. You will probably want to keep a close eye on your credit reports for the next two months to make sure NCO hasn't placed negative notations in your credit file. They are notorious for messing with credit files, often illegally changing the "date of last activity" If they start calling you don't let them scare you into paying. Don't let them intimidate you with bogus legal threats. NCO is a notoriously bad, bottom-feeder debt collection agency...From budhibbs: =============== NCO is so bad, that in 2003, they have been sued 40 times for violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). These suits are usually filed when consumers are abused in violation of state and federal debt collection laws. NCO is a money-mill, gobbling up competitors, buying portfolios of old debts for pennies, and expanding globally. These money-beggars are making their bottom-line profits at the expense and abuse of consumers. More info at: (((ROR removed for security purposes))) sorry, allowing you to give a competitors name would instigate others to just file against their competition, to only come back later to suggest their company, ..plus, if you post a competitors name more than likely they will show up on search engines as a Rip-off! - - your comments on this policy are welcome.
