There are multiple problems with this complaint: 1) You should always check ANY product you plan on storing for a year and half before using it - KNOWING that every retailer has a limit of time that can pass before a product can no longer be returned. 2) Expecting a retailer to return anything a year and a half later no matter what your story is, is simply not well thought out. If any retailer did this, every scammer in the world would bog that retailer down with their own crazy story on why parts are missing or why they didn't open the product for a year and a half. This of course would drive the cost of all products up. 3) What would be the point of a retail store taking apart a machine and removing all the parts just to use it as a display? Why not just put it out as is.... ? Anybody who would believe this is obviously extremely gullible. 4) Consumer beware? I hate it when customers say "oh i trusted blah blah blah" this just makes you sound stupid. How do you not protect your investments? Especially for $500 dollars? I would spot check any product I purchased and planned on storing for a year or two to guarantee it worked - KNOWING the return policies of ALL retail outlets. If this man was sold a display model, that is just terrible. The ICD 880 produced by Canon was a display model in all Office Max stores, since Canon refuses to take back display models on RMA/D&D/Discontinued items. So if this man DID buy the display, he absolutely DID buy a display model, provided by Canon. This specific display looks extremely real, excepted for the fact that it has no internal parts and no scanning bulb (it does however come with a power plug! lol). This gentleman was not RIPPED OFF however, he was simply a victim of an uninformed sales rep, and himself, not checking a very expensive product he planned on storing for a year or two. In closing, this man does deserve his money back and should contact Office Max through email on their website - this is a very effective means of settling disputes with the company. Also, calling any store and asking "at what store is your district managers office located at?" would also be a good option. The main problem? The amount of time that has passed - unfortunately for this man, he simply waited WAY to long.
