I feel like such an idiot. It's one of those "this would never happen to me" moments. There's no telling how much money they're going to take out of my account. All the signs were there that this kid, or rather grown man was a con-artists. I didn't confirm it until I looked at this site.
I had just got home from work. I was tired and ready to relax when I got a knock at my door. I live in an apartment complex alone and usually don't get any visitors, so hearing someone knock at my door at that hour was kind of weird. Then, to come find a stranger at my door was even more strange. He was overwhelmingly friendly and enthusiastic, beaming with confidence. A young looking guy by the name of David Alan Smith. Said he worked for Pacific Coast Clearing House and that he needed me to help him win a country in Europe of his choosing (his was Venice) or something like that through this contest called NCA (National Career Awards).
So basically, he needed me to help him earn points in order to take this trip. His attire immediately said he was low income and definitely needed the help. He also reeked of cigarettes. But by his youthful look, I figured he was college student.
After he explained what he needed help with, he says "Now, with a little enthusiasm, I need you to ask me how you can help me earn points." So I asked and he proceeded to give me a high five and showed me the magazine subscriptions. Immediately, I knew something was up. He showed me the choices of magazines and gave me the cost after I made my choice.
I was still willing to help, but I asked him if I could make the payment later, and he said "the payment you make now will take 8-10 days to post, plenty time for you to receive your next paycheck." I said I don't have any cash or check, and he said we can do it by card by calling the number to the company and he would call with me. I called it and put it on speaker and he spoke to the agent, Maire, who knew him by name. He gave the lady on the phone his agent number (I guess thats what it was) and the receipt number.
I had some additional questions for her but, she told me to just ask them to David. Within a few seconds, she hung up. David gave the excuse that because of the high call volume, agents can't stay on hold for long. So I asked him the name of the company, where they were from, etc. He said they travel all over the country in a bus or something visiting people asking for help blah blah blah sob story. When I asked where the bus was, he said they get dropped off in areas and picked up at a certain time.
I also asked if this was funded through a school or some charity function and he said no, and that that was the reason they could take credit card payments. Two big signs right there. Not for a school or charity and no freaking bus anywhere in sight.
He also went to the extent of showing me other receipts from people he visited across the country. And he showed me a list of organizations that funded them or something like that. The USO was one of the organizations on the list, a nonprofit federal organization that provides services for our troops and their families. This little guy in no way was laying down his life for America. Lies of course and if the USO found out their name was on a list for an illegitimate company, every single one of them would be in jail.
Anyway, after he weaseled his way through my questions, we called the lady back, gave her my credit card info, he filled out the receipt and gave me a yellow copy.
He also left me a small slip of paper with some stupid rhyme on it and said to stick it in my door so if other "sales" people from his company come by, they'll know he's already been there. It's in the garbage, and I'm pretty sure no one else is gonna come by trying the same thing. Fool me once wouldn't you say? He even had the audacity to try and leave me with some bullshit words of wisdom. I even called him out his "wisdom" and he tried to weasel his way out of that.
At the end of it all he told me he wasn't the age he looked and that he was actually a manager at this company and showed me an old, wrinkled piece of paper with his name and position on it. My suspicions were confirmed when I looked at this website. And the amount of money they've taken from others...unreal. And from what I've read, it's impossible to cancel the "magazine" subscription. Once they have your credit card info, it's a done deal. There's no way t stop them.
And all these ex-employees or employees on here praising the company...are obviously people who work for the scam company trying to make their name look good so that they can scam more people in the future. You all are a waste of space on the planet and a bigger waste of sperm. I work in the real world, with a legitimate job making legitimate money, contributing to the economy. Why don't you guys try doing that and make yourselves valuable to the society, rather than stealing money from innocent people? You might as well be holding a gun over someone's head.
For anyone reading this, and lucky enough to know about magazine scams before actually being scammed, do not be fooled by their down to earth, friendly, and enthusiastic nature. Do not be fooled by their ability to answer each and every question you throw at them. They are scam artists and very well trained. I can only pray for them. His name was David Alan Smith and he is scamming people in the Nashville TN area. He is short, kind of stocky, light brown skin and shaggy hair. Thick eyebrows. Looks Hawaiian or some type of islander, but claims he is of African descent.
Lesson of the story: Don't get fooled, even once.
