Pep Boys ripoff, damaged car, won't fix what they did They were VERY arrogant and acted as if I should back down and just except what they were telling me. Philadelphia Pennsylvania
I took my car to Pep Boys on Bustleton ave in NE Philadelphia, PA. It needed a new starter so I patiently waited for them to get the part and fix it. After waiting several days, it was "fixed".
I picked up the car and took it for a drive. After about 10 minutes the car started smoking under the hood. I lifted the hood to see antifreeze pouring out all over my engine.
I took it right back to Pep Boys. I explained to them that when i brought the car in it had no problems other then the starter. There was no leaking at all let alone a leak that caused antifreeze to shoot out all over. They took a look at it and told me right away that I had a pipe that was rusted from the inside and that it was just a coincidence that it happened to break as soon as I left. I was shown were the leaky pipe was, and it is right over the starter and could have easily been bumped by one of the "skilled" mechanics there.
They would not except responsibilty for the problem even after talking to two managers, and HQ. They were VERY arrogant and acted as if I should back down and just except what they were telling me. The best they would do is to fix it free but i would have to pay for the part. Seems reasonable, but why would I pay anything at all when I didn't cause the problem? I would avoid this Pep Boys at all costs. I know several people that took cars there only to be ripped off in one way or another. I only took it there due to the location being close to where I live and I couldn't drive the car very far. Please stay away. You'll thank me for it.

my daughter used to work at pep-boys and they work on sommision for the sales of things you DON'T need. They charge for repairs that don't need to be done, or help the situation along so that you do need a repair. My fiance took his car in, (before my daughter worked there) and ended up needing $800.00 worth of brake work done there. 11 months later, he went back, (while she worked there) and lo-and-behold, he needed all of the same exact work done on his car again???? How can they do this? She told me that they do this as a common practice. Tell me, how many starters a year should your car need? Take you money some place else, or just burn it, that would make more sense.
