WARNING to SERIOUS WRITERS.
5-6 years ago I had come across Poetry.com, I submitted my poetry then all the junk mail started arriving, I almost was convinced to purchase a ticket & fly all the way from Australia to Florida, luckily I didn't.
I was a teenager then so I did end up buying the so-called "Bound Edition" of a book full of poetry. As I read through the book I noticed thousands of submissions & felt that this is not "Special" they just publish whomever pays, regardless of talent or credit. I felt offended as I was taking my poetry & writing seriously as a potential career choice not as a hobby & to be placed amongst anyone from children, to hobbyists it didn't seem professional enough. That was clue NO# ONE to start my skepticism.
Clue NO# TWO was when they started forwarding me letters you have won 3rd prize or 1st prize or something & to claim your trophy you have to pay $300+ dollars. This is where my instincts started to kick in.
I sent them a typed letter stating something along the lines of this
"If I am a winner of a trophy or any prize for that matter then why do I have to pay to receive this prize. Isn't winning about receiving a complimentary prize because one has displayed the appropriate talents & skills to achieve this. It defeats the purpose to pay for a prize as then it does not seem like a genuine win".
I am sure many people cannot email any correspondence to Poetry.com, this time they actually emailed me unexpectedly in disarray & started to pretty up the whole idea of paying over $300US they said they will throw in a cd or an extra book of I didn't make too much of a fuss. I kept replying to them that "No, I am not going to pay for something that I am supposed to win, then I am not winner, I have never heard of paying for winning any writing or art or any competition for that matter apart from small entry/submission fees that usually do not amount to more then $35 in most universal cases, but me personally paying over $300US for something I do not need but have apparently won, it just does not make sense.
Anyway after about 2-3 emails they disappeared, although my poems were still displayed on their website which I am so embarrassed as this is not a serious writing site & would never mention it in any of my writing credits ever.
I am stuck with a poetry book with cheap quality paper with my poem amongst a faceless mass of other poets/poems.
Writing - for everyone out there, IT is not a joke & should never be easy to break into, I know a lot of people who would love to be known as a writer or at least have the credibility of a writer, but please lets not cheapen this ancient form of art by introducing cheap pottery sites like this. This should never tempt a real writer. Peers in the literary world take a true writer on seriously over many, many years & decades of quality work & should be a challenge of many mountains not a quick signature on a cheque to appropriate as one.
POETRY.com IS DISGUSTING as it gives hope to too many individuals whilst ripping them off when the real literary world is not as easy as they make it seem. They can trigger a whole chain of negative emotional, mental & financial problems- from children to the elderly.
