I placed an order for 3 chairs with online unfinished furniture company "Pop's Unfinished Furniture" a few days ago to take advantage of a widely advertised "free shipping" special the company was offering last week.

I placed my entire order and was instructed during the process to choose "add appropriate shipping for me" if my item was advertised as free to ship (as mine was). So, I followed all the instructions and went through the checkout process, which also reflected a zero shipping charge for my order. I completed the order, and received a confirmation still reflecting zero shipping charges.

Today, I received an e-mail from the company telling me I had selected an "inappropriate" shipping option and that if I wanted my order, I needed to cough up another 200 bucks. I promptly cancelled the order but so far, no one at the company will confirm that they have not charged me for the items.

The rationale from the company about why the free shipping suddenly doesn't really apply to my order is the weight of my 3 wooden chairs. This is an online furniture company, they don't sell too many items that weigh less than the chairs I ordered. If my order doesn't qualify for the free shipping they advertised all over their site last week and confirmed in my checkout as well as in my order confirmation notice, I don't believe any order would. I have never seen a company complete an order via online checkout and then even send a follow up order confirmation showing no shipping charges, but then several days later tell me I owe almost twice as much for the order as what was advertised.
