After my horrible experience with Avondale Hyundai -> see RIP OFF REPORT http://www.ripoffreport.com/rebuttalForm.asp?id=141323

I decided to go to the Hyundai dealership where I had gotten my wife's Elentra.

They had a deal advertised with the following:

MSRP $18,104

Clearance Center Discount $-1,709

SALE PRICE: $16,396

Power Loyalty Discount -$2,000 (got a car from that dealer)

Owner Loyalty Discount -500 (hyundai owner)

-----------------------------------------------

Total after discount $13,896

In the ad they have (if you go thru HMFC) an additional $400 off if you're a college grad (which I will be, but I don't want to use HMFC), and if you're military, you can get $500 off too. So the ad states you can get the 2005 Hyndai Tucson for $12,995.

I had them appraise my trade in, and they valued it at $6,500. If you look at my previous ripoff report mentioned above, you'll see that the original deal I took to Avondale Hyundai was now seeming like it was going to happen with this dealership.

However, one of the managers had stated that the $2000 off was only available if I traded in a hyundai, not if I was a previous customer. Good thing a finance sales manager came in and had a different story. He stated that the $2000 was only if you had purchased a car from that specific dealer before. (I had) - It's sometimes a moral victory for consumers to have a lie exposed right in front of you with the person standing there.

However, he added in his own twist. After I did up all the numbers for them, they said I forgot to add in the "Dealer Protection Plan" for $1,750. Well, I'm smart enough to know that if it's not in writing or advertised on the car breakdown, that it's not automatically included (just as if A/C wasn't on the list, it's not included in the price). Anyway, they said that the MSRP of 18,104 doesn't include the DPP and that it's on all their cars. Yeah - sure it is. Unlike my other rip off rant, this was easy. I explained to him that if that was the case, I wanted to see the last 3 Tucson's that sold with detail of the DPP in the deal (Sales Contract, whatever).

Obviously that wasn't going to happen, so I left. He didn't want to sell me the car for the deal advertised, and like most of the things I've found in regards to DPP, it's a ripoff and just another way to pad up the price.

So, unless I win the lottery sometime soon, I think I'll be sticking with my Matrix for a while. Though it has almost 84k miles on it, it still seems to be working fine.

Update: Power Hyundai The Desert Protection Package Scam Scottsdale Arizona

Stick, Very interesting links. Yes, it would be nice for our AG to do something even remotely effortful, yet in the past month going to at least 5 different car dealerships in the valley, everyone has their own scam to get you in. The one nice thing about my sales guy at Power Hyundai is that he told me that's why car buyers do to get you in and this is what they do to pretty much get you to pay more than what they offer. I don't know that he was much interested in selling cars as he was just trying to help out in the situation. However, yes I did ask to see the documentation about the DPP. Of course it wasn't listed on the MSRP or any other document for that vehicle. If they couldn't provide proof, I wasn't interested. I did end up walking out that day, however 3 days later they did call me back and said they would do the deal I had originally wanted. I ended up picking out a different color vehicle with only 28 miles on it. I think after all was said and done, I paid $350 more than I wanted to, but it wasn't the $1,750 they wanted. In a way I guess you could say they won in the end, but I figure after paying off my other car and getting this one for MSRP after taxes, etc, it wasn't all that bad. I've talked to a lot of people since then and still look on this web site. I think more people are going to start using Internet pricing, and auction sites to purchase cars if this demeanor continues in car dealerhships. It's bad enough most of them charge high prices for simple repairs. I guess that's why it can be such a profitable industry. If people are willing to pay, they won't be as inclined to change their ways.

..It's a shame that I have not seen Arizona's AG does go after any car dealers like New York's AG. Eliot Spitzer

Michael I have seen car dealers sell the Desert Protection Package for less then $295 bucks. Sounds like their price was just a plan to take back some of the discounts the gave you on the car you bought. I watched TV 12 do a insider story on Midway's desert protection packages a few years ago. Most car dealers will tell you that they put the paint protection on real early in the morning so the sun's heat will not mess it up. TV 12 asked to watch them put in on and they said that the guys who put it on were not there. It's real funny that no new car dealer will ever let a car buyer watch them rub on a container of wax, I mean the Desert Protection Package. Try to ask the body shop witch people install the DPP. Ask to watch them put the DPP on a car. Many car dealers do not put anything on the paint. I feel it's just a Rip OFF just to take back some of the money they give a car buyer in the negation process. Dealer Protection Plan" for $1,750 to me is a huge Rip Off. Did they give you any documentation on what they rubbed on your paint? Do you have any documentation that reveals the names of the products they put on your car? I bet not. Read some of these below. I feel they are informative reading! www.oag.state.ny.us/press/2001/dec/dec13b_01.html www.oag.state.ny.us/press/2001/may/may30b_01.html www.oag.state.ny.us/press/2002/apr/apr19b_02.html www.oag.state.ny.us/press/2002/jan/jan14b_02.html www.oag.state.ny.us/press/2001/aug/aug09a_01.html www.oag.state.ny.us/press/2003/mar/mar12b_03.html www.oag.state.ny.us/press/1999/sep/sep30e_99.html www.oag.state.ny.us/press/2003/mar/mar18b_03.html My hat is Off to Eliot Spitzer is a man that all consumers in New York should thank. He has the balls to spank car dealers that are reported to be playing deceptive car buying games. It is a shame I can't say the same about other AG's. Maybe one day I can chat about other AGs. It's a shame that I have not seen Arizona's AG does go after any car dealers like New York's AG. He Kicks a*s!
