A pharmacist refused to fill a valid prescription for Adderal, an amphetamine and a controlled substance, because it was written in another state by my primary care provider (PCP). I just moved here for a new job and do not yet have a new PCP. My wife and children have not moved here yet as our children are finishing the school year and I was back in our home state this week and visited my PCP but did not have time to fill the prescription before flying back here to Pennsylvania. I had this same prescription filled at this same store previously.
I believe it is unethical to deny someone medication that effectivly alleviates the symptoms of a properly diagnosed condition. I struggle to work effectively without this medication. The pharmacist could have easily picked up the telephone and called my doctor in the other state and verified that it is a legitimate prescription thereby alleviating any legitimate suspicisions he had regarding filling a prescription for an amphetamine, but I believe was just lazy.
There were three pharmacist on duty at the time and one was on the phone and the other was helping a delivery person by receiving a shipment and he asked the third pharmacist to help me. He appeared annoyed that he was asked to stop what he was doing to help me and found a convenient way to dismiss the work of filling the prescription.
This pharmacist stated that he was uncomfortable personally filling the prescription and it was his call and he stated there are plenty of other pharmacies that I could go to and get it filled. I respectfully request anyone reading this report to spend your hard earned money somewhere other than Rite Aid Pharmacy.
