Any used car is a 'pig in a poke' and even if you use every precaution it can still be a problem. Even if the seller is honest there can be unforeseen problems, that's just part of buying a used car.
However, if you don't use any precautions at all it's pretty hard to have much pity.
Please use some common sense folks, even buying your mechanic a plane ticket may be a good investment if it can help keep you from getting screwed.
I just don't get the logic.

Did you NOT notice the clutch problem during your test drive? How about the windshield crack and damaged wheels? When the car was in front of you as you did your walk around with your fine tooth comb, did you do it in the daytime and miss those as well? Oh wait a minute...I feel the magnetic fields surrounding my body change...yes, oh yes...here it is: You didn't take the car on a TEST DRIVE. You didn't even do a walk around either, did you? You didn't see any of the very obvious things...not because you have bad eyes...because you easily spotted them AFTER the sale. The reason you didn't do ANY of these things a SMART CONSUMER would do is you sent your money off to somebody you didn't know, to buy a used car you never saw, to buy a used car you never inspected BEFORE the sale, to buy a used car you did not even have your own mechanic check out in advance of you putting up one red cent!
Now you blame the dealer and we're supposed to feel so sorry for you because the big, bad car dealer shafted you. Did they "shaft" you? They certainly did. And how did they get the opportunity to "shaft" you? You were willing to send off your money to somebody you didn't know to buy a USED car you never saw, test drove or had an independent mechanic paid by you to check over. They were sitting there just waiting for someone to be able, willing and waiting to be "shafted". Guess who???
Should this dealer as well as every dealer and every human being on the face of this earth be honest? Absolutely...positively. Most people know that isn't the case and especially the case in the used car sales environment. But not you! Your common sense went on vacation and this dealer had a field day. You threw common sense out the window for a stupid car. Maybe you've learned something here. Then again, maybe not. You can get mad and call me every name in the book. That's OK. I do know that never, ever would I do something so stupid as send my hard earned money to somebody I don't know to buy a used car I've never seen or checked out! Absolutely incredible!!!
