Sierra Mountain Express Is SME still in Business? Concord California
I was one of the 1st owner/ops that went to work in Cottage Grove. I was a former carhaul teamster, and a very proficient and able carhauler. I took a lease on a brand new sterling/delavan unit and things went well... for a bit.
I started to work in July of 2001 and for a few mos everything went the way it was planned. Then we got a new manager; Dave from Texas. He pulled in sub hauler 3 car guys to pull the proffitable city freight, then the 10 car guys were put on the road pulling 4-way Des Moines-Souix Falls splits for $800. Then it started to get bad.
Those of us with competent logistics experience tried to calmly talk with Dave and to show him how he was destroying the morale and work base he had. He was beligerent and really messed up the freight base. The company never had a plan to deal with the less than profitable "road" freight. It had been bid uber cheap and it was stacking up. As a city driver I was turning out 4-5 8 unit loads per day, 5-6 days per week. When that freight started to go to the sub-hauler 3 car guys It really dug into all of our pockets.
I worked with Leonard, very smart and competent operator, I worked with Tim Chapman, same for him as well. We said it then, and I believe that its been proven out, that the absentee management at the top, and the incompetence at the terminal level would strangle and kill the company.
I eventually started running my own freight and tried to recoup my losses that way, but I still wound up in bankruptcy and lost my house.
In the last few mos Ive seen Jack Cooper trucks that looked an aweful lot like former SME trucks. Anybody know if they are still in business?

I dont really know if they are still in busn. or not. my uncle and me have hauled cars all our lives and have lived down here in Texas all of are lives and Teamsters but man car hauling went to crap this year Hadley where we worked sold out to Performance the same guy that owns Allied. He ran the Ford contract into the ground and then wanted us to vote to take a 15% pay cut every month for 2 years liKe Allied did but we voted no and Allied voted yes. He lost the Ford contract to Jack Cooper here in Texas and then filed bankruptcy on Performance Auto Transport and blamed it on the teamsters because we wouldnt take a pay cut. The real truth is that he just wanted the pay cut to collect more money before filling bankruptcy on Performance he never even tried to get the Ford contract for us all we were was a write off for Allied when he bought both of us. As far as Black Diamond goes the investment bank in with Performance there just as crooked. Now all the Allied guys took the 2 year pay cut about 2 years ago our out of a job layed off. Jack Cooper is bearly staying a float beacuse of the auto market and all of us who were at Performance could go to work for Jack Cooper and keep the same senoirty but as soon as we did we got laid off because of the auto market. Man Black Diomand and the owner af Allied really screwed it up bad man ford and hadley went hand in hand for years until they bought us out and then belly up it goes and then it went. Back in 2002 2003 I knew a guy who was a owner operater over at ATSI in the mesquite rail yard hauling Chrysler he left there and took his truck up to Tulsa and hailed GM products for Sierra Mountain dont know what evr really happened to him just lost touch over the years. I wouldnt recomend know work for ATSI tried that for about a month and that place is a joke a bunch of us tried that while we laid off a few months in the winter one year man like I said thats place is a joke. Well like every thing else it all goess to crap when you get those kind of terminal managers.
