Smoothcrete - Steve Nicholson Shoddy workmanship and hysteria when confronted - buyer beware! Mitchell, Ontario
I hired Steve based on his website, eagerness when we spoke on the phone and time line. He was able to do the cement kitchen counter top inside of a week. We want to rent out this property ASAP. Big mistake.
The counter was for a very small kitchen and yet it came in three pieces - that were different colours. there were extreme issues with crumbly corners and edges, joints that were 1/4" wide and irregular. The eges weren't square and the counter was not level. To top it off we had a gorgeous square single basin Kholer sink and the counter right in front of it was marred with three deep groves. The finish was bubbled and not the same piece to piece.
When I was called over to the site to see the counter by my partner, who had just arrived with (by sheer chance) a contractor who frequently uses cement counter tops, I saw the shortfalls. I called him to advise him that we had stop-payed the cheque he flipped out. He called my partner and I over and over. I spoke to him a few times and he became quite abusive and hysterical, name calling and accusatory quasi threats. When we didn't answer he slowed down a bit. I tried to calm him with texts and he still went to extremes and got very personal.
I offered to let him replace the counter top - with the counter condition and colour changes there was no 'fix' possible. He didn't like that solution and the texts just got more and more petulant and juvenile and he became more and more demanding and unreasonable. At this point I have hired another sub-contractor who can give us a counter top in very short order to replace the cement.
Not only is the work inferior Steve becomes 'unstable' quite quickly when problems pop up - and they will pop up! Had I read the reviews on this website and the BBB I would not have hired him.

He butchered his work and gave us something very different than he promised.
We really need to talk to other people who have had similar problems. Text at (((redacted))) if you've had trouble with Mr Nicholson and/or Smoothcrete.
