You may want to check with management about their stores SPECIFIC policy regarding the coupons, before you cry ripoff. Loss prevention executives have recently begun requiring stores to have a "one coupon per item" type policy. An easy way around this is to buy your intended item (say, an ink cartridge?) and two other small items (such as 89 cent pencils, or a candy bar).

You are completely correct here. I worked at Staples for a few years in the past, and the new policy towards them is 3 per day, and you may use all 3 at once. The former policy only allowed one per purchase. If you contact Staples directly and let them know the situation, I'm sure the corporate or presidents office will issue you some Coupons for your next purchase. Working in a large corporation policies often change because of problems with fraud, sometimes these policies do not reach all stores or just some employees. So, its all a misunderstanding, and you were in the right.
