I participated in a research study with Staywell research company in which I was promised to be compensated upon completion of the study. I was also told I would receive a bonus if all visits were completed on time. I completed every single visit and had all journal entries complete on time. I completed the last visit on March 22nd, 2014 and was told to fill out a compensation form online to get the compensation process started. I completed the form the same day (3/22/14) and submitted it online. I was told it would take "25 business days after the final completion of all visits" to receive my compensation of $375.

I never heard back from the company. After 25 business days, I started emailing and calling the company and compensation department inquiring about my compensation. I have left several voicemails since then and sent several emails all for nobody to call OR email me back. It has now (as of today) been over 100 days since I completed the last visit and submitted my compensation form online; far beyond the timeframe promised on their website. Again, nobody has the decency to call me back and I have yet to receive my owed compensation.

Recently, (last week), I received a check for the correct amount BUT within a few days of this, I received a letter from my bank stating that the check was returned because of "insufficient funds". I started looking at other reviews on yelp and Facebook about this company and they are apparently notorious for not paying people what they promise and what is owed. This company is a scam and is promising people money for work and not paying and needs to be reported and shut down.

Who to file a Formal complaint with

If you want to file formal complaints against any business. You have two options.

1. File a formal complaint with the Attorney General Office in the state in which they do business and the Attorney General Office in your state if you live in another state from the business in question.

Most have a Attorney General Offices have a webpage. It's free and I have found it to be the best at getting any compensation do me. Note though it still make take weeks for them to investigate. So it is not a quick solution. Just remember when you fill out the formal complaint form that you be as accurate and detail as possible. But I have found no business likes the Attorney General Office breathing down their neck specially when they are clearly at fault. After you have filed the complaint you might even let the business know you have filed the complaint. Then they may decide it is better to go ahead and resolve the issue before the Attorney General comes calling.

2. Make sure you file a formal complaint with the BBB (Better Buisness Bureau) in that state in which they do business. While you may not get any resolution from this other than the satifaction of knowing a formal complaint is on file for everyone to see.
