Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
This is one bad company. I can't stress enough to stay away from any dealings with Sun Stuff of Ashville or Sun Stuff Energy. If it has Peter Phelps name associated with it you are going to get ripped off.

We contracted last October to have a gunite spa installed as part of a high end stone scape at our business. From day one the only thing timely and accurate was the owner's interest in collecting money. To today the spa has not been completed and Sun Stuff has stopped working. Here are some highlights of this companies work

Contract was for an 11' by 18' Jacuzzi. The water line measurements turned out to be 10' by 16.4' Peter tried to say that pools and spas are measured from the outside of the form. I guess 100 meters pools really aren't 100 meters in the Olympics if Sun stuff were to build them.

Spa is lopsided. There is 1" more water in the left side to the right. When the size and pitch was questioned at time of concrete form. I was told that they had so much experience I didn't need to worry.

After several payments( Over $20,000) not much was done to the spa. When another payment was asked for I insisted and the contract reads all work must be ongoing and consistent. Sun stuff disappeared and left the spa sitting for the icy part of the winter. No protection was used. After listening to a Sun Stuff sub complaining about having to lie to customers, collect checks knowing they weren't coming back and making promises they couldn't keep. The sub contractor was promptly terminated. God knows you don't want the customers to know how you are going to be hosed.

Jumping ahead after many problems in May the spa had its pebble finish installed. The smaller than contracted, lopsided spa almost looking like it would be completed. This was until we filled it. First leak was an extra hole in the concrete the contractor made but leads to nowhere. The second leak is still unknown and not repaired. This leak is probably from a cracked pipe under all the new stone patios. The spa leaks 2" inches of water per day. Half of the spa jets stuck out from the plaster walls because the PVC was not set level.

This was to be expected the spa wasn't level so why would the jets be. The plaster company returned and re-set the jets and patched the hole to nowhere. Today I have a leaking spa with plaster that looks patched in seven spots. The spa is missing parts and Peter Phelps is on to bend another customer over for the kill. I didn't mention that this company got an arbitrator to protect himself. I agreed to the arbitrator agreement to get the spa done. Sun Stuff violated their own agreement and the arbitrator fired Sun Stuff and Peter Phelps. I guess Peter knows the spa will never be right so his attitude is to move on.

Before you have any work done from this company please ask Peter to explain this job to you. I will be happy to make available pictures, contracts, inspection reports and emails to support that this company could possibly be the worst or the worst is Western NC

Please checkout all reviews on-line. Make sure you go to the consumer affairs web site and look up all satisfactory and unsatisfactory complaints. You will see that the owner can explain his way out of just about anything. There are lots of good companies, don't take a chance with this one.

The picture the owner of the pool company shows is accurate. Unfortunately it doesn't show the wrong pool size, 1"pitch, jets not functioning and a water leak on top of other items not worth listing.

This owner has an active law suit against the pool build and Peter Phelps. Peter has already lost the small claims judgement for $5000.00. Decide for yourself.

Take a look at the terrible job we did.  If we were as bad as this person states why have we been in business since 1988?

Sun Stuff or Asheville, Leisure Alternatives, Sun Stuff Energy..This Is A Very Crooked Pool, Spa and Solar Company Beware

This is one bad company. I can't stress enough to stay away from any dealings with Sun Stuff of Ashville, Leisure Alternatives or Sun Stuff Energy. If it has Peter Phelps name associated with it you are going to get ripped off.

In October of 2010 we contracted with Sun Stuff of Asheville to have a gunite Jacuzzi style spa installed as part of a high end stone scape ($85,000 total project cost) at our business. From day one of dealing with Sun Stuff of Asheville the only professional, timely and accurate work seen was Peter Phelps interest in the collection on payments. To today the spa has not been completed and Sun Stuff has stopped working.

Here are some highlights of Sun Stuff Professionalism and Quality:

1.     Sun Stuffs contract was for an 11' by 18' Jacuzzi. The water line measurements turned out to be 10' by 16.4' .Peter tried to say that pools and spas are measured from the outside of the form. I guess 100 meters pools really aren't 100 meters in the Olympics if Sun stuff were to build them.

2.     The Spa is lopsided. There is 1" more water on the left side to the right. When the size and pitch was questioned at time of concrete form. I was told that they had so much experience I didn't need to worry.

3.     After several payments were made as per the contract (Over $20,000) not much was done to the spa. When another payment was asked for I insisted, and the contract read all work must be ongoing and consistent. Sun Stuff assured me that they would be there daily to work. Sun Stuff received this payment. Sun stuff disappeared for weeks leaving the spa sitting for the icy part of the winter. No protection was used.

4.     A Sun Stuff sub continually complained to me about having to lie to customers, collect checks knowing they weren't coming back and making promises they couldn't keep. When Peter Phelps was made aware of this the sub contractor was promptly terminated. God knows you don't want the customers to know how you are going to be hosed.  On a side note Peter will tell you he uses his own men. There arent any. This is a sales guy who uses any person he can find that will still work with him to get a job.

5.     Jumping ahead after many problems in May the spa had its pebble finish installed. The smaller than contracted, lopsided spa almost looking like it would be completed. This was until we filled it. First leak was an extra hole in the concrete the contractor made but leads to nowhere. Apparently Sun didnt know that a spa with 16 jets shouldnt get 17 holes.

6.      The second leak is still unknown and not repaired. This leak is probably from a cracked pipe under all the new stone patios. The spa leaks 2" inches of water per day.

7.     Half of the spa jets stuck out from the plaster walls because the PVC piping was not set level. This was to be expected the spa wasn't level so why would the jets be. The plaster company returned and re-set the jets and patched the hole to nowhere. Today I have a leaking spa with plaster that looks patched in seven spots.

8.     The spa jets only work intermittently. When the jets do run the spa caps pop off leaving cement unfinished opening. A licensed pool builder has looked at this problem and tells us the jet design was not done correctly for a spa of this size. The jets will need to be re-piped (Under the Stone Patio). The jet caps were all cut in the back to fit the crooked pipes. When this was done the adjustable jet eyeballs were all glued to stay in place. The caps were cut so short to accommodate the piping problem that they no longer lock into place. Peter Phelps answer was a lot of glue and caulk when the owner wasnt looking.

9.     Other problems include a missing under water light in the contract but not installed, leaking pipes near the pump, skimmers that dont skim and an auto fill that shuts off without filling.

Since the disappearance of Sun Stuff of Asheville we have had several companies look at our project. Two of the Plaster (finishing) companies have told us if it was a Sun Stuff project they would not come out to do repairs regardless of who pays. We do have estimates from a certified pool repair company to get the spa working. The spa will still be lopsided and smaller than contracted but for $9950.00 they can at least get it looking finished without patches and working. This does not include the $11,500.00 to be paid to the stone mason to expose piping for the pool company in order to do some of the work or the unknown costs that will pop up when the actual work is done. These are in writing proposals from reputable companies.

I didn't mention that Sun Stuff of Asheville got an arbitrator to protect himself against us (Figure this out). I agreed to the arbitrator agreement in a hope that the arbitrator could guide Sun Stuff to repair and completion. Sun Stuff violated their own agreement from their own arbitrator by not completing the work and not even attempting to finish the project on the new time schedule. The arbitrator fired Sun Stuff and Peter Phelps and told me they have never come across such a non trust worthy company.Peter Phelps still received another payment as part of this agreement. We got nothing. I guess Peter knows the spa will never be right so his attitude is to move on. Before you have any work done from this company please ask Peter to explain this job to you. I will be happy to make available pictures, contracts, arbitrator document, inspection reports, repair estimates and emails to support that this company could possibly be the worst or the worst is Western NC.
