TD Bank used to have a customer friendly bill pay system, where the amount came right off your balance as soon as you created the check or payment out of their bill pay system.  You always knew where you stood and human error was eliminated.  They changed it a few months back to a system that seemed most advantageous to TD Bank becuase it would be easy for a customer ot make errors in accounting, which would result in lots of NSF fees for TD Bank.  The first few months weren't too bad, but over the CHristmas holidays this year the only way I can I describe this bank is RABID for NSF fees.  They have changed rules that I didn;t know about, which resulted in NSF fees.  The debits from the NSF fees screwed up my balance against checks that were written before the NSF fees, and when those checks came in, more NSF fees.  When I called customer service to attempt to halt this insanity.  It was spiraling out of control.  The customer service rep was smug and acted like I was just a deadbeat.  I found out later that during this call she made a note in the system that I requested they no longer cover chaecks that came in with NSF, even though TD would still charge me $35 per NSF check coming in.  That makes no sense, since they charge you the $35 whether they pay the check or not.  So now I have to pay the $35 per check fee, plus the returned check fees to whomever the checks were returned too.  I called TD Bank to dispute, and to report that I had documentation from the State reporting that they deposited funds into my account 1/6/13.  But TD chose to hold the deposit until 1/7/13, which resulted in?  You guessed it, even more NSF fees for TD Bank.  The TD BAnk rep didn't care at all that I had documentation from the State as to when the money was depositied.  TD Bank chose to recognozie the deposit as the 7th, so tough sh** for me.  I would advise anyone to run, don't walk away from this bank, like you would from a rabid dog.  There are few feeings in life worse that realizing that 2,3,4 days of your hard work and pay was swindled from you by TD Bank, for NOTHING.  I chose to go with Capital One 360 account, becuase they have that system where as soon as you create a check from their bill pay, it comes right off your babalance, and you don't ahve to wait for the receover to cash it to have an accurate balance.  I told the customer service rep this and one thing was very obvious:  TD Bank does not care at all about losing my business.  Guess you have to be a millionaire before they consider your business worth it

There is NO such thing as a "Customer friendly" Bill Pay system.  It does NOT matter how or when a bank decides to "post" the payments.  Do you know why...no obviously not because if you did you wouldn't have put yourself in this situation.  So let me help you out.

It is very obvious you do NOT keep a written register.  That's right I am actually telling you to be responsible for YOUR account after it is YOUR money isn't it?  You see if you write down every transaction when you make it, whether it is at a Point of Sale with your Debit Card, an ATM, a Check, an ACH Request or a Bill Pay you will know you have spent the money.  So it doesn't matter if the bank posts it today, tommorow, or in 6 months on the first tuesday after a full moon.  Of course with that there has to be the condition that you never spend more than you have available.  If you are really worried about "human error" and being able to keep a balance then get yourself a calculator. You can go to your local dollar store and pick one up cheap.

Oh and as for your checks being returned.  Yep..just like any other bank you will get charged for a check if they decide to pay it or not.   The only difference is as you have found out is that if your bank returns the check you get the added bonus of paying additional returned check fees from the other company.  Boy I bet spending a total of a few minutes a day managing your account is sounding pretty good right about now isn't it.

I called TD Bank to dispute, and to report that I had documentation from the State reporting that they deposited funds into my account 1/6/13.  But TD chose to hold the deposit until 1/7/13, which resulted in?

- That is correct. If the funds are deposited on 1/6 they are posted overnight on 1/6 making them available on 1/7.  With almost all deposits they will not be available until a minimum of the next business day.   There are some exceptions for WIRE TRANSFERS(not the same as a deposit) and Cash deposits to a Teller and a few others where the funds would be available immediatly.  There are also cases where deposits could be held for several business days.  If you want to find out what the specific policy is, go into the bank and ask for their "Funds Availability Policy".  If you are still unclear you can contact them when ever you make a deposit and ask when the funds would be available.

I do have one question.  Since you say this bank changed their policy, what are you going to do if(when) Capital One changes theirs?  Are you going to switch banks again?  Wouldn't it be easier to just take responsiblity like an adult.

Oh and if you really want to go there as for some reason most people who are being told they are wrong do..no I do not now or have I ever worked for a bank, and if you would pull what I am sure is your head out of your **s you would realize I am actually telling you how to avoid ALL overdraft fees regardless of the bank you go to.  And to even blow your mind a bit more...if you go into a branch and ask I would bet that they would even give you a register to use and perhaps even give you a quick lesson on how to use it.
