The EXACT thing just happened to me--HOWEVER I called the 800# and had a 'nice' 15+ minute conversation. Not only could she NOT remit the $4.00 chg (balance is 246.68) but reminded me that a booklet was sent out in MAY (NEVER EVER RECEIVED) and the Bank has been so 'kind' to automatically waive the fees until now. LUCKILY I avoided the new 'free' chking fee of 15.00 as Direct Deposit no longer matters as before, giving me free chking since the bank took over last yr. My bank now had 4 different owners--THIS ONE, TD BANK, is the very first to ever charge fees!!!. THEN she suggested that I go into the branch and switch to a 50+ acct. I asked "Why didn't the Bank's computers, knowing my DOB, automatically give me that FREE Acct instead of switching me to the MOST EXPENSIVE one, it seems, in chking. She said the Bank 'knows best' based on my history. (of writing ONE chk @ month--to Landlord. LOL). Usually my balance would be under 600.00 BUT I fooled them. HA! I had over 600.00 the whole month of JULY! For savings NO WAY to avoid fees w/out any minimums. NOW, it's on to the METROPOLITAN CREDIT UNION in CHELSEA,MA where I can get true free chking WITH Direct Deposit AND a special savings acct with a rate of appx. 4%. It's true--For Working People Credit Unions are the way to go. PS: She implied when she refused to credit the 4.00 that TD Bank is taking a very Hard Line in this, assuming everyone received their legaleze booklet (saw it in Branch--need a college degree just on the first page) detaling how TD Bank is "bringing better banking to the masses" and on pg 14 the detailed changes in accts. To me with yrs of college--very confusing to say the least. NO MATTER, I should've been sent a note with my last 3 statements about future fees--RIGHT ON THE STATEMENTS PEOPLE ACTUALLY READ. PLUS--My DOB should've been the clincher----HOW SNEAKY/DECEPTIVE. PERIOD. Any comments: 6174617047
