Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I bought a manufactured home from Clayton Homes in Monroe, LA. The HVAC installer is selected by Clayton Homes and forced on the buyer, moi, as part of the whole "package" deal. So, I must now endure the following contractor whom is unlicensed(not required in LA for residential work -- this is interesting, because my $10 a head barber is licensed), non-union, and has no physical business location other than his house(what a pro!).

First, my outside air unit is basically thrown onto the ground. It was not made level or aligned square to my home. I guess Johnny's outrageous hourly rates are not enough to entice him to pick up a shovel or a level and give the job that added professional touch.

Second, the conduit used for the wiring looked as though it were scraps he had laying in the bed of his pickup at the time. Yes, a little seal tite here, a little smurf tube there, and some PVC to finish it up. I was in the IBEW long enough to know what a professional job vs. a halfassed job looks like -- trust me, his was no professional job.

I let the issue slide for some time, until I called him out for a potential problem with the AC's cooling performance(I've got a one year warranty on his work after all so why not?). I called and left a message; it wasn't so urgent to call repeatedly.

He comes out at about 5PM without calling prior, and cites his irritation with my phone being busy everytime he tried to call me back. Yeah, it's my phone and my right to use it -- does he pay my phone bill? Personally, I would not have shown up without calling first; after all, 25 miles is a long drive if the people ain't home -- right?

Anyway, I let him in; he checks the filter and gauges the air temp coming out of the vents, while making the comment in ear shot of my animal loving wife that we have too many pets and how he "hates a cat". We have two! Stop here! If his customer's selected his service personally, would he deride their lifestyle?

Now his whole attitude is chaffing my a*s, so when he brings up the subject of payment ($75 for 15 min of work for finding nothing); I tell him, "listen, you can write up invoices all day long but that don't mean I'll pay". A few minutes later, while he's out back getting serial and model numbers off the unit for his invoice, I take the opportunity to deride his lousy workmanship on the installation. I ask him how hard it would have been to level and square the unit. He replies, "What? You expect me to run a paver over the ground first?"

In truth, all he needed was a flat shovel, a level, and some effort. I imagine he only lacked the later -- maybe it was his gut that got in the way. Well that's about the end of it. I'll spare you the ugly two-way cussing match with him that followed, and when he made the mistake of saying, "...and what are you gonna do about it?!"
