 June 2013. Tescos, Vauxhall, London.

Waiting in line to pay. Some sort of issue at the till so thought i'd move along to next till, started packing items back into basket. The cashier started speaking in my direction in an intelligible Irish accent. "If you don't want to pay here, go somewhere else, i don't care if you don't pay here".  A nasty rasping voice accompanied the trash spewed from it's mouth.

I was stunned, as i'd not said a word. "Why are you speaking to me?" I said. "i don't care where i pay". Because the till issue seemed to have been solved. Margarat the Harridan "Why am i speaking to you! Why am i speaking to you! I 'm not serving you! Report me, Maragaret, till 2!"

I don't know when last i encountered such bizarre behaviour. I couldn't even think of anything to say. This individual had the demeanour of an alcoholic, so perhaps that was the problem.

Why does Tescos employ such outrageously rude, aggressive staff on the till? I know they're only on the minimum wage, so it can't be easy to attract people with a more professional outlook, but this is crazy. The idea is to attract people into the store to spend money, not make them want to shop elsewhere.

I called for a manager, only to find myself face to face with a snot nosed kid in an oversized, cheap suit, didn't look a day over 12. Didn't introduce himself, so i have no idea whether he was in fact a manager. Name badge: Richard. That's d**k for short (in the UK). "Yeh?" he said. I explained what had happened, to which the apparition responded "It'll be investigated and dealt with, but we can't tell you the outcome."

I said i felt i was being fobbed off and that an apology was in order and that Maragaret the Harridan needed a crash course in customer service and communication skills. I said that he didn't inspire me with confidence, what with his lack of substance, lack of authority, lack of presence and the fact he didn't look a day over 12. to which he asked me to leave the store.

When i got back to the office, i shared the story with colleagues and we had a good laugh.

It's no surprise Tescos was voted worst UK supermarket in 2013 in a poll conducted in Feb 13.
