This report does not contain any monies paid or credit cards used, at least so far. My husband's Social Security number I mistakenly gave to the reported company. It started by multiple phone calls at our house to several unknown first names but they always had our last name. The automated message identified them as the specified collection agency and to call if they did not reach the right number. We did that at first. They even left messages on our answering machine and when we listened to the whole message, whether or not they had the right person, the same number we instructed to call. We finally didn't answer the land line and operated by cellphones. Conservatively, I think we've received 25 calls so far.

As I indicated we don't owe anything that's past due at this time. As I do often, I was going to change our user name and password for a loan company that we have had for 5-6 years. Having so much trouble to accomplish that simple task, I clicked on the area that said "press for help". This was on the page with a correct company logo. There appeared a small box that said to call a phone number. The person who answered the phone identified with the correct loan company and after they had transferred to another department, another individual asked me for the loan number or social security number to verify that I was the right person. Since I didn't have the loan number before me and since the loan is in his name, I gave them my husband's SS#. I know it's stupid to do, but I gave it to them, thinking I was still talking to the trusted loan company.

After that (over the cellphone) came the same automated voice and the same collection agency, and said their intent was to collect an overdue loan. Same collection agency even though it appeared that they had answered with the loan company's name. It is possible that the first person I talked to wasn't the same person I ended up with. Or, maybe they have a way to superimpose a "press here for help" button. Obviously I did what I shouldn't have done, and I don't know what to do about it but report it to someone.
