I am writing this rip off report on behalf of my sick mother. She walked into her local wamu bank to find out that her account was closed (short of $1000). After filing a fraud complaint with Washington Mutual they were able to tell us that her account was closed at the branch where her account was opened. After getting a copy of the withdrawal slip it was clear to an amateur that the signature on the slip was not my mothers and also the name was misspelled. Also no id was required. Sound alittle upsetting ? Not to seem like i'm looking for sympathy but the money was from my grandmothers death benefit (ssi) and was being saved to use to engrave my grandparents tombstone with a portrait. After speaking to the executive management office (end of the line for answers @ wamu) they basically declined to help and or investigate the incident. my mother in the past few years has had failing health and has been in the hospital for extended periods of time and to her luck, this past december she had been struck by a car as she was crossing a street. (once again not looking for sympathy just understanding) and basically they declined our request for resolution due to length of time to file. (thanks eddie ramirez x468 @wamu). i have now contacted the NY Attorney Generals office, Federal Trade Commission, Better Business Beareu, The Regulators Office of Thrift Supervision, and NY State Banking Department to file complaints. I explained to these managers at Wamu that the total cost of screwing a customer like my mother with an advocate like me for a son would be 10 times greater than just quietly resolving the matter by returning the funds. They don't care ! Look for my future post at consumerist ! Don't Bank with WaMu. They dont care about you or your money !!!

I got ripped off too twice at two different Wamus, both in L. A., CA; one on the corner of Fairfax&Beverly and the 2nd on LaBrea/Melrose cross-street.

I deposited cash about 50 times in the past 5 years as a wamu customer and I've never had a problem doing that there until late last year in 2007 the bank teller lady counted my cash ( sometimes they take it out of sight to the cash - counting machine and sometimes count it out loud where you can see it - the latter is obviously the best option, I know) and told me an amount which meant that I was missing $20 from that pile then I thought I miscounted but I was angry since I frequently deposited large amounts of cash at that particular branch and she saw me there all the time and most of the time, helped me with transactions so I was VERY suspicious. I always count my money the same, also recount about 2-4 times before EACH deposit. About a month later, I went to the other location at the corner of Fairfax and Beverly as my new branch to see what was up and, of course, make a deposit. A lady teller took my cash, counted it but I wasn't looking the whole time, dammit then she said this amount was $200 less than what was supposed to be there:( I asked for the manager and the manager was also a woman; she herself counted the money but I forgot to mention the cameras should be used now... I was so weirded out I just left and I am switching banks, dammit. I am also a woman so not prejudiced at all but they were all women, and those women were all middle-aged with bleached-blonde hair. The one at the Larchmont Branch is younger than the other two at the Fairfax Branch, has a scar on her forhead and she's pale. WATCH OUT!
