In 2003 a Wayne Dalton model 9100 18x7 Garage Door and iDrive was purchased at Lowes Inc. The door was installed using the manufacturers hardware. The door came with the TorqueMaster style counterbalance system.

Initially the door seemed to work fine and while only minor adjustments were needed initially. After a couple years however, the opener would need to be replaced. Of course "Tech Support" puts you through a few mundane requirements to evaluate the Wayne Dalton iDrive opener but that seemed normal. After the evaluation, tech support sent another iDrive out and it was installed using the methods required.

Again the opener performed it's duties for awhile. Then the all too familiar problems reoccurred. The Wayne Dalton iDrive manuals were downloaded from the Wayne Dalton Site that covered the installation, troubleshooting etc of the openers. Enclosed in the digital manuals an important note was found. Upon inquiry with Wayne Dalton via email exchange, an 18 foot door weighs about 275 pounds. The iDrive standard instructions claim that the a "door must not weight more then 304 pounds". However, the Spec Sheet for iDrive indicates the door "must not weight more then 225 pounds". "The Max weight for the iDrive Pro is 300 pounds".

The conflicting information creates a sense of alarm as to determine a units safe operation for being overloaded by a 18 foot door weighing nearly 300 pounds and the opener rated for a not more than 225 pound door. Having read the information and directions, it was believed the iDrive Pro would remedy the ongoing problem of 7 years. One of the Wayne Dalton Reps handling the case, insisted on sending new torquemaster springs but claimed they had no control over the opener itself for replacement. After a disappointing call to tech support and 7 years of aggrevation from a good idea poorly executed and the companies refusal to correct the bad iDrive unit, the decision was made to inform others to beware of the iDrive Unit and relate Wayne Dalton Experience to other potential buyers who wish to make informed decisions based on current owners of the equipment they might be considering.

In closing, I believe had the Wayne Dalton Door Company had the customers safety and satisfaction in mind, Tech Support for the company would not have hesitated to replace the opener and make every attempt to resolve the 7 year old issue. To resolve the issue now, another brand of conventional opener will be installed.
