Consumer beware! 16th street dental office, located at 1375 W. 16th Street, used to be a good place to have your dental work done when Dr. Shields and his staff worked there. He is now retired and sold the business over to a group called: 16th Street Dental, Dr. Scott R. Hannon, DDS & Dr. Cody H. Skinner, DMD. This new group does not know what they are doing as far as their billing. First off, they have a woman, which I believe to be one of the dentist's wife, at the front with her baby on hand, trying to charge you for things she is not sure are covered by your insurance. Even if you've checked with your insurance prior to your dental visit, she will tell you that she has to check and that you need to pay now or get a bill in the mail for the amount she "believes" should be paid by you. She also tells you that she'll either call you or send you a bill with the actual charges once she checks with your insurance. Later you will receive a bill without explanation of the charges for which they are charging you for. If you call asking for explanations or an itemization of the charges, you will never get a clear answer from the staff, nor will you receive an itemized bill in the mail. The woman will tell you that she will get back to you with that information, if you call, because she can't figure it out herself, and you'll never hear from her again. Even if you call again and again, you will always get the same answer and you will never receive a clear explanation of why or what you are being charged for. Sooner or later, you'll get a surprise in the mail from a collection agency asking you to not only pay the ridiculous charges, for which you still don't know what they are for, but on top of that you will be told that you have an additional $200-$300, for the collection agency's fee. Oh if you don't pay all of it in 15 days, the collection agency WILL permanently damage your credit, no questions asked. So, if you are a smart consumer, please shop around and first find out what you are getting into before you get RIPPED OFF!

Dr. Hannon has no association with Dr. Skinner or 16th Street Dental

Several months ago, a patient named Marthi listed a complaint with your organization. In it she complained about billing and credit problems resulting from services provided at 16th Street Dental Care and identified Scott R. Hannon, DDS and Cody Skinner, DMD as principals of the office. Serious errors were made by Marthi in associating Dr. Hannon, his address and his phone, with Dr. Skinner and 16th Street Dental Care. Those errors must be corrected. Please be advised of the following: The practice previously held by Dr. Shields now known as 16th Street Dental Care is located at 1325 W. 16th Street Suite 4, Yuma, AZ. Marthis billing and credit complaints stem from services at that practice and location. Dr. Scott Hannon is in no way associated with the practice located at the above address. Dr. Hannons office is located at 1375 W. 16th Street Suite A, Yuma, AZ -two buildings west. Dr. Hannon is not now, nor has he ever been, associated with either 16th Street Dental Care or Dr. Cody Skinner, and had nothing to do with Marthis treatment or subsequent billing issues. When visiting Scott Hannon, DDS on Google, THE RIP OFF REPORT is the first item that appears by his name! It is regrettable that in her haste to air her complaint, the patient got her basic information wrong and damaged the name, a completely separate practice and a fine man who had absolutely nothing to do with her experience. It is also regrettable that we at 16th Street Dental Care did not make the RIP OFF REPORT or the public - aware of the obvious error when we wrote our first rebuttal. We also failed to make Dr. Hannon aware of the error or the report. For that, we apologize. This is to request that you remove Dr. Hannons name from the negative report immediately to ensure that the people of Yuma do not associate him with the problem or the practice at 1325 W. 16th Street. When a Google search for the name Scott R. Hannon, DDS occurs -RIP OFF REPORT should in no way be associated with it. Sincerely, 16th Street Dental

In response to this complaint, let me take a minute of your time to explain a few things of which Im sure MARTHI was not aware when she visited the office. When the practice was purchased from Dr. Shields, we felt it very necessary to retain the excellent staff that was currently working here, including the office manager, Carrie.

We were right in doing that-they have been an excellent support as we began treatment for our Yuma patients. Carrie had a baby boy and agreed to return to work earlier than prescribed with the understanding that the new baby would come with her until a few months old. This was a great help to our patients as we began settling in to our premises.

As to insurance information provided by our staff- all insurance policies are arranged by the employers with the insurance agencies. As a courtesy, we will file the claims for our patients and wait for the insurance companies to pay their portion. However, since the inception of strict privacy laws, as a third party, we are not given exact amounts that the insurance may pay. So, we must estimate, to the best of our knowledge, what each different insurance policy will pay for accepted treatment. Of course, we expect that the patients share is paid on the day of treatment, just as you would for any other purchase you may make each day.

At the end of each visit, a walk-out statement is given which provides a list of each type of treatment provided and the amount the patient paid that day. When the insurance Explanation of Benefits is received with the insurance check, we send a statement to the patient indicating any amount still owed-or if the insurance company paid more than we estimated, we will call the patient and notify them that there is a small credit due them.

When the patient has misplaced the walk-out statement listing all the treatment, we are happy to provide a copy of the ledger listing all of the same information, as well as indicating all payments. We value our patients. No one is ever sent to collection without first being contacted by mail and by telephone multiple times. We would prefer to work out terms with our patients without involving a collection agency. We know it is in our best interest to work with the patient in every way possible.

Thank you for taking the time to read the above information. Please feel free to contact our office manager, Carrie, for any additional information you may need. We love Yuma and plan to be a part of this community for a very long time.
