My elderly mother had an issue with her ice maker. My handyman replaced the ice tray and auger for her. The next day, the refrigerator failed. My handyman returned, removed the parts and gave my mother a full-refund. She then called Aero who replaced item #GEWR51X10101 DEFROST HEATER W/HARNESS. The price for this part is $23.55. The suggested list price from GE is $46.25. They charged her $$89.95 for the part itself, no labor.
They also proceeded to charge $49.98 for the estimate. Generally, if the estimate is not accepted, then you are out the fee. If you hire the tech to do the work, they should waive the fee. They also did not give my mother a senior discount that she was entitled to receive. Being elderly, she told the Aero tech exactly the amount of money that she was refunded from our handyman, and this Aero tech rigged her bill to take all of her money plus.
Our community needs to be aware of companies that our preying on our elderly people. She's handicapped, she's alone, she has NO IDEA regarding what is acceptable in the way of repairs. They knew it and they took her for what is a lot of money. When she lives on her S.S. and a company like these cheats her out of $235.29, it's disgusting.
I'd like this company to 1) provide her with a senior discount; 2) charge an acceptable fee for the part they installed; 3) revoke the fee they charged for the estimate. We need to take care of our elderly people and not allow crooks to assault them financially.
