American Express is cancelling accounts and lowering credit lines for many people, some for lowered credit scores and some for no apparent reason. I have had my account for five years and built it up to $50k. They had a great cash rewards program so I used it a lot. I had been carrying a large balance, paying on time, never late. The day I paid off the balance they cancelled my account. I understand it is at their discretion to do this, but as they have done every year in the past, at the end of that cycle they were to post my Annual Cash Rewards. My statement clearly states that I had earned $675.71 and for details see cash rebate summary on the statement. This statement is at the end of the purchase summary.

"Important Rebate Message

Remember to pay at least the minimum due, by the payment due date, to avoid cash reward forfeiture.

Earn Cash Back Everywhere

You Use The Card You will receive your annual cash reward one month after your anniversary date. There is no limit on the rebate you can earn. So, you can keep earning cash back - no matter how much you spend on your Card."

They would have posted my rebate on the first day of this cycle, but since they closed my account, they haven't done it. I can't get an answer from anyone at American Express about when or if they are going to give me my rebate. I earned it and they owe it to me.

Any attorneys out there interested in helping me out with this one?

I have not reviewed the laws in this area nor have I read back through the original contract for the catch, but I am an attorney and American Express did exactly the same thing to me. I had 8 years with them, late once, but otherwise on time and paid in full each month. The late month I was called out of town for a death in the family and received Holiday pay on that one so technically never late. About 4 months ago my card limit was dropped without notice (I am looking into this as a violation of the truth in lending act) and then my account was closed by American Express for a $228 claim on my credit by NCO Financial and Dish Network. I have spoken with NCO and explained this is not me. I have never had Dish of any kind nor have I ever been to Indiana, where the service was installed. This is all very unfair and it is my belief that American Express has tried to purposely drop card holders which automatically forfeits your reward dollars. Like you I had $500 to $600 built up. I am waiting to see the next bill to see if they credit them. If American Express is monitoring this I would highly recommend paying out the full amount I and others in this forum are owed to avoid defending a class action which I beleive exists. I would like to hear from others with similar stories to confirm my suspicions. Whoever said no legal action must work for Amex because at the end of the day there is some back room dealings that are really hurting consumers who relied on American Express and the cash back bonuses promised in all the advertising and paraphenalia given to us. What's in your wallet?

Unfortunately, the terms and conditions that you agreed to by using your card state that your rebate is forfeit if the account is cancelled. Period. Amex cancelled your account because your risk as a consumer was higher than the underwriting limit, therefore your account was cancelled. Your rebate is forfeit. And, since you agreed to the terms and conditions, you have no legal grounds to fight it. Sorry
