The detergent in Red Shield is for all intents and purposes, automatic transmission fluid. It is a mild solvent which does indeed clean sludge deposits from metal surfaces, however it still can be too harsh a cleaner on some small, sensitive parts, especially over the long term. Remember "Marvel Mystery Oil", it claimed to assist in the break in of new engines and to help keep motors clean. Marvel Mystery Oil also is basically automatic transmission fluid, and it wasn't recommended to be used all the time either.

Liz, you are absolutely correct. My furnace was also severely damaged with red shield. The technician who repaired mine told me that it is a HUGE problem statewide, that using red shield was like pouring Tide right into the oil burner. Supposedly, as he told me, red shield is a very very poor quality detergent in heating oil that is much cheaper for the company than traditional detergent additives. I remember when my furnace broke down, I called C N Brown and they were the most rude people, absolutely did NOT want to help me even to find a technician. Thank god my furnace was not condemned. I'm glad to hear i'm not the only ones with problems on their heating oil.
