Late 2005-Two retirees purchased a $3000 membership at CRA after sitting thru 90-min. sales pitch at Emerald Cove, never intending to join. Never used any of their facilities after that one time, although intended to and paid two $389 annual "maintenance fees" in late 2006 and 2007.
Due to health issues requiring many prescriptions & loss of much of retirement savings, we did not renew (pay the $389) for this year, relying on sales person's assurance that if we stopped paying it for any reason, the membership would be canceled. Apparently the sales person passed away since we joined in '05. CRA continues sending bills & has threatened collection even though membership card & certified letter canceling membership were sent to them. Bills now accrue at $10 or $20/month "finance fee" & most recent bill is over $400.
We used their Emerald Cove facility once and never used it or any of them again. They've collected a lot of money from us, which we haven't attempted to recoup, but only asked that they cancel.
We feel we owe them nothing now, yet they continue billing. It appears they'll continue to accrue the "finance fee" even after membership has been canceled since they are only after the money. We cannot afford an attorney. They appear to be willing to run up the fees to a point where it will make it worth their while to pursue through collection.
On top of health concerns & costs and the economic difficulties faced by nearly everyone these days, this harassment is extremely stressful.
