I recently signed up for Directv after 10 years with Dish Network. The only reason for signing up for Directv was because after being an AT&T customer for 15 years I received a letter stating that the two companies had merged. Upon calling to set up Directv I was told that I would still get the same programming I had with Dish which included local channels.

The first red flag was the confirmation letter which did not show locals. Upon calling Directv I was told not to worry because Directv receivers will grab local channels from a rooftop antennae and place them in the program guide. All this sounded like a fine solution.

Installation time comes around and the first technician doesn't know how to install my service because of the rooftop antennae. He convinced my wife to sign a paper showing he was there and that someone would fix it. Upon coming home from work I notice multi switches and diplexers attached to my home which were in no way at all needed for this installation. I call tech support and they say he should have ran seperate coax for the rooftop. So to make their job easier I personally fished it through my wall so that no technician would have to.

Fast forward to the third technician in 2 weeks( the second did nothing but admit he did not know what to do). This technician actually looks at my house, removes the switches and puts one splitter in line to fix it all. It took him about 3 minutes. He then walks into my house and looks at the receivers only to say that the receivers I have will never put locals in a program guide.

Now after 2 more weeks of calling nearly every day to get the receiver that will do this I am told that it is only available in an HD form. Which the want me to pay for. After several more calls they agree to send the receiver if I will pay $10.00 more per month. Finally I am told the original sales agent did not know the equipment well enough to make the statements she did. However since it has been more than 24 hours, I cannot cancel without paying over $400.00 for a service I never received. Even though I called the first evening and was not informed then that my receivers would not work. Directv refuses to waive the cancellation fee and now I am forced to submit letters to a billing department to dispute cancellation fees. I will gladly pay hundreds of dollars to a lawyer to become a thorn in their side than agree to pay a cancellation fee for a service I did not receive.

i heard on the local news that att dropped dish network for poor customer service. that 2 years ago rupert murdoch had put direvtv up for sale for 10.7 billon dollars. that i havent heard of any sale of directv yet. but the sad truth is . that directv pays a real dealer anywhere from 235.00 to 300.00 for an installation. and dish pays anywhere from 300.00 to 500.00. but they get installers to do the same install for much less. from some of the installers ive talked to. have told me they get anywhere from 60 .00 to 100.00 to do the installation. after 26 years in the satellite business. ive learned the satellite manufacturers will say or do just about anything and even some dealers. i would go back and read your contract. now they were required to leave you a copy. if you didnt get one. call directv and askthem tosend you a copy of the signed contract with your signature on it. call the state attorney generals office and the bbb in your state.
