In many instances when individuals rent a car for replacement purposes, such as an insurance claim, a third party will be billed for the cost of rental. However should a third party default for any portion of the payment, responsibility will then revert back to the renter. In instances similar to the one discussed in this case, an insurance company was billed for a rental until the insurance company decides to end payment. Even then, many times insurance companies will short-pay an amount,(paying a lessor amount on a bill than stated), leaving the renter responsible for the unpaid balance. You were correct in this case by calling your insurance company. After they sent the unpaid balance to the rental agency, your money was refunded. Most billing errors of this kind are due to miscommunication between the renter, the insurance company, and the rental agency. The insurance company will tell the renter to return the car on Tuesday, but the renter returns the car on Friday. However the insurnce company does not the the rental agency that they have stopped payment. So when billing is issued, it is for the amount up to Friday. When the insurance company sends the payment in 3 months, it is only up to Tuesday, leaving the renter responsible for the difference. I sincerely apologize if there was a miscommunication in your rental experience.
