I rented a car from enterprise in march 2001 due to my car getting stolen. My insurance was covering the whole bill but they still needed to allow $50.00 authorization from my checking account. I did sign and when I turned my rented car back the bill for 14 days was $491.00. As I was checking out I asked the lady do I owe anything and she said NO your insurance is paying for the entire amount.

I left and 1 week later I had a check bounce and couldn't figure out why. Then my bank statement came and it said $91.00 was taken off for enterprise rental. I called my insurance company and he said they paid the entire amount. I called enterprise and he said i owed $91.00. I told him I only authorized $50.00 no more. He said sorry about that. I then said my insurance company paid the entire amount why did you take the money without telling me? He said I owed the money. Well I called my insurance company and he was mad.

After 5 weeks of complaints to the manager I finally received my money but I do believe if I hadn't bounced a check they would of kept the $91.00 and much more from many customers like me.

Sounds like a scam to me....maybe only in ohio where I rented the car..but beware of your credit cards.

In many instances when individuals rent a car for replacement purposes, such as an insurance claim, a third party will be billed for the cost of rental. However should a third party default for any portion of the payment, responsibility will then revert back to the renter. In instances similar to the one discussed in this case, an insurance company was billed for a rental until the insurance company decides to end payment. Even then, many times insurance companies will short-pay an amount,(paying a lessor amount on a bill than stated), leaving the renter responsible for the unpaid balance. You were correct in this case by calling your insurance company. After they sent the unpaid balance to the rental agency, your money was refunded. Most billing errors of this kind are due to miscommunication between the renter, the insurance company, and the rental agency. The insurance company will tell the renter to return the car on Tuesday, but the renter returns the car on Friday. However the insurnce company does not the the rental agency that they have stopped payment. So when billing is issued, it is for the amount up to Friday. When the insurance company sends the payment in 3 months, it is only up to Tuesday, leaving the renter responsible for the difference. Enterprise Rent-A-Car the largest rental agency in the United States. Our business is founded on serving our customers, not ripping them off. I sincerely apologize if there was a miscommunication in your rental experience.
