We received a lovely realistic looking check for $4950. Woohoo! All we have to do is call some claim agent, Mr. Tony Edward, who will will validate the check. After that, we're supposed to deposit it and then send them the "tax charges" of $2900. Once they receive the $2900, they'll send us the balance of our award - $115,050.00. Woohoo again! Not...
Fortunately, we know this is a first rate scam. The check looks real. They're using W.W. Grainger's name on the checks. We've notified Grainger.
We're hoping that by posting this here, people will be warned not to cash these checks. We don't know the liability of depositing a fraudulent check, but it can't be good. At the very least, by depositing it, our own account number will be on the back, giving them more information we don't want them to have.
Since it came in the US Mail, we're going to report it to them - Mail Fraud is a Federal Offense. Maybe they can get in real trouble.
