About a week before Christmas, I was approached by General Revenue Corporation (GPC), a debt collecting agency to settle a debt--my student loan debt.  I thought I was in forbearance on all three of my loans, turns out the loans had been sold again to another company. GRC was their debt collector attempting to collect the debt and said I was in default. I was shocked. Keep in mind, I am a single mom with two teenagers and most of the time we get our food from the food banks.  In other words, we're poor and I am working a small job taking care of an elderly man, and writing job that doesn't pay anything, but it's a great experience.

GRC was really harassing me on the phone, calling me constantly trying to get me set up on a payment plan. I tried to tell them-you can't take money from someone who doesn't have it, but they wouldn't take no for an answer, they just kept on calling and harassing me day and night.  They finally caught me attention when they told me Sallie Mae could keep my IRS refund unless I was on a payment plan with them. Then I would get my normal IRS refund with no problems.... So I started the payment plan (smallest amount they offered) with GRC and they guaranteed that Sallie Mae would NOT take my refund. I had at least five GRC debt collectors tell me this within a three-day period.

Today I received a letter notifying me that I WOULD NOT be receiving my IRS refund because my loans are in default. General Revenue Corporation lied to me. Not once, twice, but five times by five different people. I need this money to get caught up on my bills.  All my bills are PAST DUE and in danger of being turned off.  PG & E, my landline phone, my internet (I need this for my job), my car insurance (have to take my kids to school), and the tags on my registration are way overdue. I was planning on using my IRS refund to get caught up on my bills.

GRC needs to fix this. These debt collectors need to call Sallie Mae, admit they lied to a lot of clients about getting their refunds for the sole purpose of making commissions for themselves. GRC has made their commissions on our dime, now it's time they make things right with the clients. They made me a promise--They said if I went with one of their payment plans, and I did, I wouldn't have to worry about anyone taking my IRS refund from me. I am doing my part, now you do yours! GRC, your reputation isn't so good right now and it's getting worse. Just look on the BBB website or this one. Come on General Revenue Corp, do the right thing for once............ If I were the President of Sallie Mae, you'd be fired in a heartbeat!
